Has anyone fallen out with you or almost fallen out over the GE?

We are lucky in our family as we were all Tories but all are now undecided but for sure won't be voting Tory, Labour or right wind candidates as things stand ATM

Brexit was a hot topic but in some homes, the GE is and can cause problems, division or worse.

Nope. In our family we are all looking forward to when we #GTTO.

Cuidaew · 31/05/2024 20:17

A cousin stopped speaking to me after Brexit as she voted Leave and I commented the day after that Leavers were either rich, old, thick or racist or combination of the above. I would say the same now about Tory voters tbh

EffieeBriest · 31/05/2024 20:21

Why are you all lucky because you are a Tory ?

Brexit was a hard one

We are Asain and all of us voted to leave and now keep quiet about it at weddings etc - at the time, the misinfo we had, we fell for it as me and family were fed up with "it is an EU rule" - I recall vacuum cleaners having reduced power etc because of EU rules

Thankfully, re this GE, we are all of the same stance but worried what will happen if anyone other than labour got in via a coalition partnership

It's the same poster who started a thread about junior doctor strikes this morning. Just looking to post controversy, not convinced they're genuine.

If not tories, labour or a right wing party then I guess it's Green Party for you OP.

99% certain it will be an idependnet as long as they are not right/left or green winged and theperson is of excellent standing in my books. Other than that it certainly wont be Labour unless they promise to bring in a no strike clause for all NHS workers - or I would consider Tories again if they got rid of Truss and promised to increase tax allowances as this will help everyone that has an earned income and or pensions and earning less than 125k per annum

The Green Party, a load of @@@ at its best worse than almost every other main political parties - I would trust them a lot less than the Liz Truss

Zonder · 31/05/2024 20:44

Do you even know if there's an independent candidate standing in your area?

Scavernick · 31/05/2024 20:55

I am right wing with a very left wing family. They don't know and I won't tell them. Luckily we are not close in any case.

I agree, I'm not convinced this poster is real.

EffieeBriest · 31/05/2024 21:33

@Scavernick what is it about right wing political ideology that you admire ?

I too am interested in finding out what drove you to be a right-wing supporter.

Are you a soft or hard right if you don't mind me asking

In recent years I've started to understand more and more why when I was a kid quite a few of my relatives were obsessed with the secret ballot. Several refused to even tell their spouse or kids who they voted for. Probably saved a lot of family and friendship fallings out.

With your dilemma on who to vote for OP. One option is to consider voting on a local constituency basis rather than national party. Have a look at your local candidates.

As a complete aside I find it so striking on MN people we “driven to” any ideology (provided obviously it is not proscribed etc) but it’s always said here about anything RW only

CheshireCat1 · 03/06/2024 14:12

We don’t as a family fall out over who we vote for and it’ll be even easier this time because we’re all voting to get the Tories out. If you fell for all the lies in the EU leave campaign, you’ll probably need to do some research before you vote. Look up the candidates for your area and go on theyworkforyou.com to look at their voting records. This may give you an idea of whose ideals align with yours.

Anniegetyourgun · 03/06/2024 14:35

Family all have somewhat different political angles but I can be reasonably confident I won't have a problem with their choices (it'll be tactical GTTO for most of us, probably further left for one or two). Ditto long-standing friends. Colleagues are a different matter; staying off politics is the best course for the most part. I'm not going to persuade them of anything, so why stir things up? If they start on something I can't agree with I'll just say that, well, I can't agree with it and hopefully that'll be an end to the subject.

murasaki · 03/06/2024 14:45

I read it as the op felt lucky that they all agreed. Even if it was Tory. So there weren't arguments. No excuse for falling for the Brexit bullshit, mind you my mum was devastated when youngest sis voted leave, and couldn't get her head round it, nor could I. We had to agree not to talk about it. Sis has since admitted she was an idiot.

My family are broadly left wing but politically homeless atm. So we all agree on that.

Invent · 03/06/2024 14:52

I think this is probably the LEAST controversial GE ever.

Clearly the Tory's have been in long enough. I actually think they did an ok job of Brexit and Covid. I mean not a 10 but a 6 or 7 and even I would like to see them as the shadow government.
It's just not healthy to have the same party in for another term.

But Labour who should be smashing it in all the polls still come across as a bit crap and the ineffectual stand on trans vs woman's right is appalling.

I don't think anyone has much of an idea about who to vote for and you can justify voting for anyone.

No need to worry about any one other than Labour getting in via a coalition @DistinguishedSocialCommentator ! Yougov MRP predicts a bigger majority than 1997🤣🤣🤣

I think people have been blithly risky at work and among friends of assuming we all vote the way they do.
I find that mind set so hard to bear even if I vote the same way I feel like shocking them and saying something extreme.

I would never talk at someone and presume they all feel the same.
