Glad that Reform will split the Tory vote

Apart from people wanting to see a Labour victory, I'm optimistic that the Reform Party will really split the Tory vote.

Hopefully some of the candidates will even lose their deposits.

I’m more worried that in certain bits of the country it’ll be the Labour vote it’ll take away from, namely those former Labour heartlands who voted Tory/Brexit last time round and might be expected to swing back.

That's a good point.

I do always think that the far right Tories will go for Reform.

Reform are the real Tories. The Conservative Party has abandoned many of the key principles that were in their DNA since Peel and certainly Disraeli- low direct taxes, love of the monarchy, law and order, for example.

TheShellBeach · 30/05/2024 10:17

Are Reform the real Tories these days though?
Hasn't the Party evolved?

I agree. The Conservative Party used to stand for law and order, support for the monarchy, sound finance and low direct taxes. Ever since Peel and Disraeli.

Not any more.

I think that the 'red wall' may well be the ones voting for Reform. There are very many working class voters who feel disenfranchised by the hopelessly out of touch Tories and by a Labour party that touts gender ideology and campaigning for Palestine as vote winners. It will be an interesting election.

HRTQueen · 30/05/2024 20:05

The impact isn’t likely to be significant they are not ready for an election

I think they are as likely to gain votes from not just Tories but those who voted Labour until 2019

Oh I doubt that, honestly.

They are not organised enough likely a reason why this election has been called now

you not aware how many UKIP voters were previously Labour voters ?

Then you are not paying attention.

I agree

And I’m glad that when people realise just how bad it will be under Labour and that only the champagne socialists can afford the massive tax rises coming our way (including the massive increases in fuel costs we will have to pay when the energy firms pass on the cost of windfall taxes to the paying customers) they will vote them out at the earliest opportunity and Reform will get in 😊

If we swap our champers for a good prosecco we can use the difference to contribute to Comrade Starmer's enforced gender class indoctrination schools. That's what I'm bettting on (but no inside info - I'll leave that to the tories).

But you’re forgetting that Labour will set up Great British energy from day one that will create loads of jobs and lower our bills!

Oh how I’ll believe that when I see it..

I also agree that taxes will go up ( the ones Kier Starmer didn’t mention).

I think council tax and fuel duty is going to go up massively next spring.

Do people also realise that net zero is going to cost an absolute fortune, and in fact all the UK will do is move its emissions abroad , which won’t actually lower the global emissions?

All net zero does is moves the problem to places like India or China.

Meanwhile the massive cost will make us poorer. If only people other than Nigel Farage could be honest about this and voters could see this.

I would gladly swap more tax for a public sector that can function. At the moment I’m forking out for private healthcare because I can afford it and I’ve lost a bit of faith in how timely the NHS could be (although otherwise wonderful). Would switch tomorrow to a tax if it meant that not only could I actually see a doctor in good time but everyone in society could too.

Entirely agree with this.

@Scavernick this is precisely what I think will happen.

Fleetheart · 25/06/2024 12:56

I agree that there will be tax rises - after all it’s our money that this hideous administration has been squandering for the last 5 years or so. I say 5 years because it’s only since Boris that the dishonesty, nepotism, bribery etc has been so atrocious. Does noone remember the test and trace app and the unreal sums of cash that were wasted! That’s our money and will now have to be recapped. And unfortunately the people who are responsible will get off scot free and people will blame Keir Starmer. But I am glad those lying tories are going and at the very least we will have some adult politicians in power who have more integrity than the whole of the current Tory party put together. (with the exception of James Cracknell who talks sense).
