Calling the GE in the middle of the summer break, makes it really hard for uni students to vote! Both of mine give up their TT accommodation (same as thousands of others) in June/July and will be home or travelling for summer. I am the only adult in my home and get a single occupier discount. Which I've just been informed that I would lose if they are registered here, they can't register back at uni as they don't have a contract in place even though they are exempt from council tax.

It feels like the GE has been called deliberately in July to stop them voting for their future or as usual financially punishes us already struggling 😕

Most students have sorted out next year's accommodation in November and December so for them to not have a contract for the next academic year seems crazy!

If they are registered up until July they can still use that address and vote in the GE locally to their uni.

You will not lose your 25% discount if they registered at your address for the summer. Whoever told you that is completely wrong. They just need a letter from their uni for you to show the council tax department at your local council.

I dont think it's a conspiracy theory against students. Although u do think the Scots have something to complain about as its in their school holidays so a lot will be away on holiday.

Swissrollover · 29/05/2024 11:33

Who informed you? That doesn't seem right as students can be registered at both addresses, but can only vote using one address.

Dc both have two registrations, even with long leases in place.

You are wrong, they can register at home , it doesn't affect your council tax because they are students. My dd has been duel registered which is is completely ok

Confirmed by my council as both 21, only disregarded until 20 and as both have just returned from a year abroad as part of their courses, they are not registered in their uni area.

Postal vote!

Much more convenient, get your vote sorted at your own convenience, no worries about illness, long working hours or holidays.

Google citizens advice confirms they are still students. AFAIK there is no age limit. Google the electoral commission confirms they can register at their home address via the local council to vote and get a postal vote or proxy vote if they are not there on the day.
