Now the investigation has closed I hope people will leave her alone.

She’s 70 and retiring after 37 years in parliament. I don’t blame her, she must be pretty tired now.

But she has also been told that she may not stand again (for Labour), no?

BIossomtoes · 29/05/2024 09:44

SofaThrow · 29/05/2024 09:42

Yes she has suffered racism and misogyny which is disgusting. Women MPs have a dreadful time in politics still.
The fact remains that she wrote a very ill advised and offensive letter which has got her in to this situation. And of course she has been managed out - what else would you call it?

Edited

I’d call it retirement. She apologised immediately for the letter.

Well you can call it that but Labour have barred her from standing again.

BIossomtoes · 29/05/2024 09:50

I know. And she’s standing down because she’s had enough. With her majority she’d beat the shit out of the Labour candidate if she stood as an independent so it’s very kind of her not to embarrass her party.

That’s not what she’s saying.

Diane Abbott says she has been banned from standing for Labour at election

MP confirms she has been given back Labour whip but will not be allowed to stand as party’s candidate

Her Twitter 22 mins ago said:

"Naturally I am delighted to have the Labour Whip restored and to be a member of the PLP.
Thank you to all those who supported me along the way.
I will be campaigning for a Labour victory.
But I am very dismayed that numerous reports suggest I have been barred as a candidate"

https://x.com/HackneyAbbott/status/1795740459085750561

And from Peston:

"Diane Abbott received a private letter from the Labour Chief Whip yesterday telling her that she was back in the parliamentary party, as @AnushkaAsthana revealed. Abbott believed that would be the precursor to her own announcement that she would be retiring, to be accompanied by a flurry of tributes for her service from Starmer and others. That elegant departure had been under negotiation for weeks I am told - which is why she felt badly let down when the Times was briefed that she had been banned from running in this election. All she wanted, I understand, was the dignity of being able to say she was choosing to stand down. This looks like a mess that could have been avoided"

Hi @Simone86 have you any thoughts about the police or HMRC looking into Nadhim Zahawi and his tax affairs?

HMRC did look into it, with the outcome being that he paid the tax he owed plus a 30% penalty.

If Angela also pays the tax she owes, then great! 👍🏻

HMRC says she doesn’t owe any tax. 🤷‍♀️

Streeting wriggling like a fish on a hook about this on LBC at the moment and pretending that he knows nothing.

The truth needs to come out and Starmer needs to front up soon as this is damaging to the party and I would imagine to Abbott and she herself has given two different versions of the story now.

Do you pay tax to HMRC that you don't owe? if you do, then of course Rayner should pay extra too, along with everyone else.

Or don't you believe we have an independent Police force and HMRC?

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 29/05/2024 13:26

BIossomtoes · 29/05/2024 13:06

Of course you have.

Apparently what they are claiming about the DA fiasco isn’t true, as I’m reliably told.

What other inference am I supposed to draw?

Their Food section is rather good though, I’ll give them that.

SofaThrow · 29/05/2024 13:30

I think Starmer's latest comment on this is to stop Abbott saying anything else - dangling the prize if she is a good girl and keeps schtum. If I was her I would crack on as an indie candidate now and stuff him.

Have i misread the OP title?

I'm sure Angela isn't spelt with a D

Quite. Diane Abbott and Jeremy Corbyn, as a modern day Thelma and Louise impersonation,, driving off in the North London sunset.

I’m pretty sure that if you were 70 and had spent the last 37 years being vilified and racially abused you’d just want to retire and enjoy your pension. She must be desperate to put her feet up.

TooBigForMyBoots · 29/05/2024 13:36

LlynTegid · 28/05/2024 19:43

I would like to see the person who made the vexatious complaint be charged with wasting police time. Won't happen though.

Me too.

Well I don't know her so I couldn't comment on what she actually wants to do - I would definitely run as an indie in her position though. Corbyn is 75 and I don't hear people telling him that he should retire.

Another reason not to vote for them

You’ll hear me saying it. Corbyn should definitely just disappear.

bombastix · 29/05/2024 15:01

I feel zero pity for Corbyn or indeed Abbott. Keir S is clearly completely ruthless but since both of them are now in the “unacceptable” bracket what did they expect? They had their chance in 2019 to display their leadership and the country overall found it a massive turnoff. Politics is a rough game - what use are they now in a new government? I would say none; and both of them failed to take a hint to resign or leave in good time. Abbott should get on with it! If her apology was going to be accepted well, you would have known by now.
