How to ‘tactical vote’?

LegalAlienated · 28/05/2024 12:31

Please can you help me out? This is the first time I’ll be voting in a GE since sorting out my British citizenship.
I live in a conservative/lib dem area. I don’t want to vote for any of those parties.
Is it a complete waste to vote labour?

tactical.vote/
You can use this website
Just put in your postcode

Best use a spread of sites - there will be a lot of mischief making with people posting links to "tactical" sites that mysteriously always say vote Tory.

The point of tactical voting is to vote for the candidate best placed to beat the candidate you don't want to win.

A good rule of thumb is whoever came second last time. However boundary and candidate changes may skew that slightly.

It's never a waste to use your vote- if you want to vote Labour- vote for them. Over time, their vote share in your constituency may increase.

@SerendipityJane has offered good advice on voting for whoever came second last time

Also might be worth noting that Lib Dems do have voting reform as a policy; they would like the UK to move away from First Past the Post

This was my result:

This constituency had a high-profile defector candidate in 2019 who is not standing this time. The best tactical vote here is unclear.

What to do?

YellowHairband · 28/05/2024 14:28

Tactics voting works when you know who you really don't want to get in.

You've said it's a Tory/Lib Dem seat - so vote Tory if you really don't want the Lib Dems in, or vote Lib Dems if you really don't want the Tories to win.

If you dislike them equally, or really can't bring yourself to vote for either, then I don't think tactical voting will be something you can do.

Dover and Deal?

If you want to stop the Tories getting in (which I assume you do otherwise I guess you'd just vote for them), then labour is your best bet in Dover. No one else came anywhere near in 2019.

Tactical voting is intended to work when you know who you don't want in

Yeah, that's what I said.

Finchley and Golders Green. In 2019 I voted lib dem, as the candidate was Luciana Berger a defector from Labour.
