We’re not bought that easily, Mr Sunak - still voting Labour.

Or appear to. Failing to realise that income other than the state pension will be taxed as much as ever.

I don't see any government ever setting the personal tax allowance below the level of the state pension. For one thing, that would mean that state pension payments would be either subject to tax at source, or all pensioners would have to make tax returns. That would be a huge new administrative burden

For another, it would make it clear to those who fondly believe that the state pension is tax free that it actually isn't and never has been. Those who don't understand the difference between what tax is due and how that tax is collected (which I suspect from comments on here is most people) would feel cheated.

As someone with not too many months to go until retirement, I'm all for a bit of bribery, as long as it doesn't mean I actually have to vote for the buggers.

Me neither.

I don't know...it's always worked in the past...

BIossomtoes · 19/06/2024 10:47

Now isn’t the past. People can see how shortsighted bribes have been in the past and the long term damage some of them have inflicted - right to buy being a prime example. Offering people who have been round the block a few times £14 a year doesn’t cut it.
