General election 2024

Let’s have compulsory national service for 65 year olds

So, if it’s a good idea to press-gang 18 year olds into national service, why don’t we do the same for those getting their pension? Everyone in the first year of pension should spend at least one weekend per month doing volunteering in their community. It would help to build community spirit, help the NHS and improve people’s fitness.

Respectfully, MNetters don't have the type of teenagers who are out and about on the streets stabbing each other and destroying town centres

So direct it at those, not all 18 year olds.

Incidentally, this MN had a brother who did exactly those things decades ago. Stabbed someone and was sent to borstal. He would have been a bloody liability to the armed services.

Sounds like he needed some sense of community.

Perhaps you'd like to propose that this is only applied to children of a certain economic class. It can only be a good thing

Jessie21 · 26/05/2024 13:07

@2dogsandabudgie exactly. It would only be a positive thing but for some reason people are scared about their little darlings having to get off their araes and do something

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/05/2024 13:08

No, he needed locking up, not being trained to shoot people, @Jessie21 😁

Trainstrike · 26/05/2024 13:09

We'd be better off making everyone work in customer service for a year than in the public sector where all they'll learn is bureaucratic nonsense.

Oh, forgive me @Jessie21. You served yourself?
No? Thought not.

I feel like you're purposely ignoring the fact that there's also a volunteering aspect to this?

And the fact that volunteering etc., would help the communities and the children

Jessie21 · 26/05/2024 13:10

@MrsSkylerWhite I've volunteered. Which is another aspect (that everyone is ignoring)

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/05/2024 13:11

For what, military service Jessie?

Or just advocating that for other people?

pizzaHeart · 26/05/2024 13:11

Bluevelvetsofa · 26/05/2024 08:58

There are probably a number of people doing just that. Volunteering in charity shops, libraries, CAB, hospital drivers, National Trust, reading in schools, governors, local councillors. Just the ones I can think of immediately, that I know people do. There’s probably quite a lot more.

Yes, but it’s not the point. There are a number of young people who do exactly this. Not in so many numbers because they still go to school/college/uni plus some of them have jobs as they don’t have pensions as an income but they still do volunteering through DofE scheme, Prince’s Trust or to get work experience etc.

MissingMoominMamma · 26/05/2024 13:12

When I collect my pension (at 67), I will probably still need to work too.

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/05/2024 13:11

Are you actually just refusing to acknowledge that the other aspect of the service is a volunteering placement?

Or do you just want a fight?

Look I get why you are pissed off with the National Service proposals but why are you turning on another generation? They aren’t one collective group and a fair chunk of them will not be in favour of the idea.

We need to stop turning on one another. There has been a deliberate attempt by politicians to make us do this and it needs to stop as we are playing directly into their hands with their blatant manipulation and it doesn’t benefit us as a society.

To be fair, the generation this is supposed to appeal to was also the first generation to NOT have to do national service. Seems a bit rich to vote for a party (as some will) on the basis of it having an effect on the 'youth of today' with no impact on themselves.

K0OLA1D · 26/05/2024 13:13

My parents, mum is 60 this summer dad almost 64 are retired. My dad had to retire because he literally is worn out. Can't work anymore.

My mum helps me, both with my home and the dc and my brothers dc. Also care for my nan. Which is getting a bigger job. She's busier now than she ever was working.

So no. YABU.

How the fuck are two thirds of 300 people voting YANBU and agreeing with the OP??! 😂

Most batshit thread I have seen on here for WEEKS! 😆

No one will be forcing 18 year olds to do military service, only if they want to. Some youngsters might like the idea. Others will be able to do voluntary work, but I imagine if they are already doing that under various other schemes that would count.

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/05/2024 13:16

Nope, firmly against fighting unless it’s in direct defence of your homeland.

Yes, it will be voluntary. Initially. Therein lies the problem. Should this shower get back in there will be no reigning them in and it will be one compulsory within the first term.

Please tell me, is your voluntary service military?

My son’s was. Royal Lancashires, CCF.

ASighMadeOfStone · 26/05/2024 13:17

bonzaitree · 26/05/2024 12:40

How on earth would they possibly enforce such a policy?

Does anyone know? Would they be throwing youngsters in jail for non compliance?

Nope. Sadly for the frothers, it would be mandatory only for NEETS and only in specific circumstances and if the NEET didn't want to do it, they could do 25 days voluntary work instead.

The estimate is that approximately 20% of older teens would be affected by SOMETHING THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN.

What would that be then?

Still fixated on the military and ignoring the other aspect, I'm sorry you struggle with reading comprehension

Absolutely, this.

Jessie21 · 26/05/2024 13:19

@ilovesooty it's no secret that children from more deprived backgrounds have lost out across the last 14 years of the Tory regime. They've lost access to community spaces and their families have suffered more to the point where they cannot eat.

They lose their sense of community and they turn to other outlets. It's basic sociology.

They're not going to be fighting anyone!

No, he needed locking up, not being trained to shoot people, @Jessie21 😁

Your brother would have been exempted then, as he would in this hypothetical case by being (possibly) mentally unfit, unlikely to pass the necessary psychological assessments and with a criminal record unlikely to be spent under the RoO stipulations.

So stop shouting at people and making yourself look stupid by ignoring the fact that numerous people have pointed out to you- nobody is about to put a gun into someone's hand.
