Ideology not policy

It occurs to me that if all the political parties focused on selling their ideology not their short term vote snatching policies then it would make for a much more interesting discussion.

Couldn’t agree with you more. I hate all of these promises that are just vote bait. Also I think many more would meet in the middle on policy decisions if they actually sought a bit more detailed understanding of each other’s position on key issues.

Do you think they don't because the parties assume that we know what they stand for because frankly I'm not really sure.

Yes. I always take the view that the world will change in 5 years and sometimes the most sensible thing to do is to rip up the election promises and react to what's happening. So I'm more interested in understanding what values will drive those decisions than the details of a specific policy.

I agree, though I suspect this time we won’t see all that much being promised by way of specific, detailed, concrete policies anyway, so that whoever gets in can’t be held to account when they fail to deliver.
