Why did Sunak call an election now?

I’ve just seen one commentator say that he was expecting his own party to oust him and he therefore called an election to save face.

He's a fucking moron.
Probably meant to call an electrician.

Best line of political commentary so far! Grin

Some city centre seats might be impacted by students being home with parents and between addresses in their uni city.

Really??

So it's not them making a statement about him?

BobnLen · 25/05/2024 13:31

Probably fed up with it, once he had become PM, it was a case of been there, got the TShirt, right what's next.

Suspect he’s asked them to resign, it’s the unpopular ones, so he can bring in fresh blood.

When would he be bringing in fresh blood? These guys aren't going until after the election are they? By which time he will also be going.

Over 70 mps have stepped down.

Why are tories resigning, is it to pressure sunack to go?

No, it's because they don't want to fight an election campaign that they know they will lose.

Spidey66 · 25/05/2024 15:18

Ok but a bit picky. My point being it’s normally around this time of year, not December when BoJo called it.

This. They want to avoid their very own Portillo moment.

They only had to be every 5 years for a brief period of time. The fixed parliament act was only in place from 2011 to 2022.

Ok what I meant was ‘at least every 5 years.’ Forgive me for not quoting the Fixed Parliament Act. It had to be called at some point this year.

Jasmin1971 · 25/05/2024 15:35

He doesn't want to face what's coming anymore. He knows the game is up, he has absolutely nothing left. 14 years of absolute shite might finally be over

There is going to be an awful campaign.

Dreading it, but hoping to breath a massive sigh of relief on July 5th

Also because the timing of the elections in the USA in November

We don't have any MPs now because parliament has prorogued. These 70+ MPs (and that's just the Tories) have said they're stepping down and not coming back. So by the time it comes to bringing in fresh blood Sunak will also have gone.

Papyrophile · 25/05/2024 16:04

There are EU elections next month, and the US election in November, so getting on with it in early July before the Summer Recess makes sense. He's bound to realise that after so many years, the mood of the country is not with the Tories.
