Exactly that, with the Election Looming I need to understand Politics more! My Socials are full of Rishi out and Kier in.. Are Labour really going to make a difference? If so, How?

Can l someone explain what privatising the NHS means?

You pay less tax but pay everytime you use it like you do at the dentist?

it means different things to different people.

It sounds as if you would have to pay on use, but often it actually means the companies delivering the service are private, profit making, ones, but it is still free at point of use to the patient.

Some people think profit making companies have no place within our health care system. Others think the NHS is large and sometimes wasteful, and a better value for money service can be got via private companies.

Imagine you have a bag of sweets. You have jellybeans, chocolate coins and fudge. But you can only choose one type.

You look at them for a while, smell them, read the ingredients for each, trying to decide which to choose.

Then you turn them over and realise that all of the sweets are rotten and putrid underneath so would all taste awful anyway - making stressing about choosing correctly pretty pointless.

Spirallingdownwards · 23/05/2024 08:59

I suspect noone will actually come on the thread and say why yiu should vote Tory even if they think that and will be doing so anyway.

They will be issuing manifestos so have a look at those and see which aligns more closely with your views and vote accordingly

2dogsandabudgie · 23/05/2024 09:00

If you need someone to tell you who to vote for then you shouldn't be voting at all!

Please look into Reform UK as an option

Only if you are loving the benefits of Brexit, and a bit racist

I would love to hear why? If someone could give me the top 10 things they have done in the last 14 years that has made the country better than it was.
I can think of one that they can claim and 2 that they pretend to claim.

  1. Gay marriage
  2. Furlough (though every single western country did this so any government would have done it)
  3. Vaccine rollout (NHS did 90% of it)

So one thing. Out of many shit things. I might have missed something so it would be good to know.

Only if you voted for Brexit, think Nigel Farage is someone to be admired, and are racist. Look beneath the bullshit.

DontBiteTheCat · 23/05/2024 09:08

Manifestos will be published shortly, laying out the priorities and plans for each party and how they will be paid for. Read them.

Look at the country now, how it has been for the last 14 years and decide if you’re happy with that.

If you don’t know how to vote and you are doing ok, then vote for those in society that are most vulnerable.

Truetoself · 23/05/2024 09:09

We do need a change. Unfortunately Labour will come in and spend the next four years blaming the Tories for their lack of progress and not make much of a difference. I understand the changes that are promised- but HOW will they generate more money and more people without increasing taxes yet paying people well and keeping immigration low?

For me Rishi Sunak is not a good politician- however, he has a brilliant mind , is very hard working, and is the best person to lead the country to economic recovery.

Zimunya · 23/05/2024 09:10

@BringMeSunshineAllDayLong - nice analysis!

If it matters to you (it does to me), have a look at the party manifesto and what they say about women, women's rights, and single spaces. I appreciate that this isn't of interest to loads of people. Equally, this doesn't mean that I intend to vote Conservative (I don't). But I may not vote at all, as I can't bring myself to vote for a party that is quietly but aggressively eroding women's rights. Appreciate that the Labour manifesto may have some new info on this, and I look forward to seeing it.

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 23/05/2024 09:11

Equal marriage was in the coalition agreement so it was the Lib Dems who were the driver behind it.

Why not actually read what I put?

minsmum · 23/05/2024 09:18

Never let anyone else tell you who to vote for. Read all the manifestos, read newspapers across the whole range, left and right, think about what you want the country to look like. Then make your decision

Each and every one of the policies will be costed in the manifesto. The Tories have trashed our economy, that is a fact that can’t be argued with, and whoever comes into power is going to have to make difficult decisions to get it back on track.

I would be happy to pay more tax to live in a better society, and I am far from well off.

How anyone can think that the Tories will improve our economy, while looking at what austerity has done to vital services over the last 14 years is beyond me. Less police, higher crime rates, more children living in poverty, record NHS wait times, mental health services cut to the bone, the closure of domestic violence services….just who is better off after 14 years of this government? They conserve nothing, and they’re corrupt to boot.

Aposterhasnoname · 23/05/2024 06:45

You really shouldn’t be asking people to tell you who to vote for. Apart from anything else no one knows who’s standing in your area.

Watch for each party’s manifestos and read them, then wait for the candidates in your area to put leaflets through your door and read them. Then decide which one aligns the most with your views and vote for them.

But a lot of them promise things they never do and end up changing things they never mentioned so what’s the best way to see through the bullshit?

im in the same position OP. I don’t get it either! ☺️

Ifallelsefailschocolate · 23/05/2024 09:25

check policies for each party

Vote for the policies, not the person

Damnyourheadshoulderskneesandtoes · 23/05/2024 09:25

The next couple of months with have candidates at your door, manifestos through your door, debates on the telly, watch them all and then decide!

Ifallelsefailschocolate · 23/05/2024 09:35

The debates are just smoke and mirrors
Some candidates are full of it.

Read the set of policies they have in their manifesto leading up to the election- this is what the whole party are aiming for. Vote for what best aligns with you beliefs and wishes for the future

TeenDivided · 23/05/2024 09:35

Don't listen to anyone who says 'if you vote X then you are Y' as that is a tremendous over simplification, and shows imo an inability to realise people have different experiences and views and priorities.

Boxerdor · 23/05/2024 09:37

I would consider how the Tories have done over the past 14 years and decide if you want this to continue. Think about schools and the NHS and what’s happened to them over the last 14 years. Remember lockdown and how the government acted.

OK. I'll explain it like I did to my 18 yo - first election.
Watch the news (actual news - not GBnews). Read some articles. Look at the manifestos when they come through the door and vote for who you think most closely fits what you want.
Any vote is better than no vote.
