Any idea on what regiment "9th Lus" is?

I have this on a British Army WWI Medal Rolls index card for a possible relative. But I have no idea which regiment it may be... Would have been in France in 1915, though, because whoever he was was awarded the 1914-15 Star.

I have been googling military abbreviations have not read through all of them BUT am not having much luck. I will try some more in the next few days.

Is it definitely Lus and not 'hus' (bad handwriting?) If so could be 9th Hussars.

eidsvold · 08/04/2009 13:36

oh yes it could be - iklboo I did think it could be something else but drew a blank - but 9th Hussars could be a possibility.

PortAndLemon · 09/04/2009 00:20

Hmm... Here's the scan -- it looks like 9/Lus but I suppose it could be 9 Hus, at a push. What do you think?

Def a 'L' so its 'Lus' will have a google/ask around

Will that link be of any use?

Well, he's not the man I'm (vaguely -- he's off on a sideline but the spacing of his children suggests he was off doing something war-related so I Want To Know) looking for. But then I don't know whether the medal roll card I have the image of is the man I'm looking for (getting an idea of the regiment was a first step towards seeing if it was a realistic possibility).

I have other people in the Labour Corps around this time and haven't seen "Lus" as an abbreviation -- and normally they have an original regiment recorded too.

This is in no way vitally important, just a bit of a puzzle...

Is he French or British? His name is spelt the French way and yet with a surname as Miller........?

Claire2009 · 09/04/2009 00:47

If its to do with France well.....

"lus" in French means "read" in English

FAQinglovely · 09/04/2009 01:03

is that definitely a U??

Look at the "R" in France.........it looks just the same (to me)

Claire2009 · 09/04/2009 01:07

Ohhh your right there FAQ!

FAQinglovely · 09/04/2009 01:10

I can find lots of references to various "9 Lrs" (9 Lancers?) but they seem to be for loads of different Corps )

FAQinglovely · 09/04/2009 01:15

??? says reg no. incomplete has "L" instead of the 4(?) but 5556

FAQinglovely · 09/04/2009 01:20

could it be the 9th (Queen's Royal) Lancers?? They were in France in 1914 according to this and then used as infantry

FAQinglovely · 09/04/2009 02:03

9th Lancers made up part of the 1st Calvary Division

eidsvold · 09/04/2009 04:56

Okay the 4 is not a 4 but an L/ Just written very slanty so that may help.

THink FAQ has got it.

FAQinglovely · 09/04/2009 09:14

oooooo yes Eidsvold - in the clear light of day it is L / isn't it.

eidsvold · 09/04/2009 11:13

oh FAQ - I have not been doing my research for a while and so got out of the habit of looking for other ideas to writing - BUT when what you are seeing makes sense in the context of someone else's suggestion or what you know to be the case - it is so clear then isn't it.

FAQinglovely · 09/04/2009 13:28

I haven't done any research or anything like this - I only went a googling as it intrigued me and seemed like a challenge

PortAndLemon · 09/04/2009 14:12

Thank you all! Yes, I think you have it there, FAQ. By itself it doesn't get me any closer to working out if this is my chap, but I can add his details to my growing "things to check at the National Archives should I ever get there again" (I only live a few miles away, but since having children there are other demands on my vacation time).

And following various links I saw that DocumentsOnline now has Royal Marines service records available, so I downloaded my great-grandfather from there. And that forum looks a very useful resource, too.
