Don't suppose anyone here lives in Camberwell/East Dulwich and likes to walk round graveyards?

Long shot, I know

I have recently started tracing my ancestors and they are mostly from this area.

I live in Scotland, so too far away, but if anyone wants me to look round local ggraveyards I would be delighted

That's ok - will do my best and let you know sometime Friday.

Hi Wallace - well made it to the cemetary (my hubby had the day off so he came with me). Good job he did as the part where your Baily monument is was very overgrown and brambly and prickly. Went and asked in the office and the man behind said "oh you won't want that part it's for the old graves"!

Anyway, the monument is around 8ft long by 5ft wide and has a large stone cross on top and then the whole lot is surrounded by a rusted metal guard. It was covered in green moss, brambles etc. but we had a shovel and got to see the writing.

It says on one side The Family Vault of W. Baily of East Dulwich and on the other side says William Baily died 13 Jan 1849 in the 40th year of his age.

I took some photos and then had to leave to get back to my daughter's school carol service but phoned the office again today and they gave me all the names of the people buried in the vault. There are 10 in total including William Baily.

Don't know if you have these other people but I took all their names and dates of burial and can let you have them. If you don't mind me letting everyone seeing them I can type them on here for you maybe tomorrow as at the moment I am using my sisters computer as mine is in for repair. The photos I can send you somehow as well.

Let me know. Thanks.

Fantastic! Thank you so much, this is definitely my family William Baily was my Great-great-great grandfather.

I wish I had seen this on Friday (my fault, forgot to check ) Hopefully you see this.

It will be fine just to type them on here. I think 10 names is more than I have, I am so excited!

Thank you so much, you are so kind and very generous with your time. I wish I could do something for you in return!

Do you accept CAT (messages through mumsnet)? And I could CAT you with my email address for the photos, or I could just post my email here.

I'm orioginally from east dulwich and live in Scotland now - that was really kind of you scarfmaker.

Hi Wallace,

Here goes with the list of names - i've only their dates of burial - if you want more details of the people i can give you a ref number and page number and there is a local history library in Camberwell which holds more records of these people - i can get the telephone number or if i get a chance in the new year i could go there.

By the way i can't accept CAT messages yet - if you could post your email address and i'll get the photos to you.

Susanna Baily bur. 1851

John Walker Baily bur. 1873

Gosh thank you so much I do have some of those names, but it makes them seem so much more real to know where they are buried. Until you gave me the William Baily name I didn't even know for sure that it was the right family monument that I had the details for. And it has given me some more names to work with.

My Grandma is going to be so happy - the last names on your list are her Grandfather & grandmother.

If you give me the ref and page numbers that would be great, and I can phone. (But if you do happen to be in the area feel free to pop in)

My email is sjmackintosh at hotmail dot com.

Thank you so much again. You are a star

Hi Wallace, I am originally from scotland (elderslie - birthplace of sir william wallace dontcha know!) and now live near east dulwich . It sounds like you might have found what you are looking for in west norwood but I am very close to Nunhead cemetary (it was one of london's "big 7" cemetaries), so if you think there might be anyone in there to look for I am happy to do so. It is HUGE though, so would probably need a little help trying to narrow down where they might be if you think there is anyone there.

Twiglett · 14/12/2008 19:25

oops sorry Wallace, forgot all about this .. glad you got your answers though

Wallace · 14/12/2008 19:27

Thanks, I think scarfmaker has got everything I need. But if I ever do need any more help I will definitelty be asking

Hi Wallace and Scarfmaker
Just found this trail of messages. I am interested in the 19th-century Baily family (all ironmongers at that time), and especially in John Walker Baily - he collected many archaeological finds from London in the 1860s and I am writing a paper about him and some of the objects. Do you have any more information on him or his brother Charles - perhaps even a photograph? I can let you know what I find out too. Hope to hear from you

Oh no, I'm so thick. My last post was written in the belief that page 1 of this thread was all there was. Not the first time I have made this error.
