Can anyone help interpret the pencil squiggles above the words 'assistant nurse' or suggest what they mean? This woman married after the register was taken, in 1941. The page is for Streatham in London and she was listed in 1939 as working for the Red Cross there. Her married name has been inserted and DOB has been corrected too which would have been routine I suppose. Just puzzled at this 'AyA' or whatever it says! Anyone ever come across it before?

"Anyone ever come across it before?"

Yes, I've seen the exact same thing.

I believe that it's simply the initials of the person who altered the date of birth.

I had a similar thing with a person I was trying to trace, her date of birth was recorded on the 1939 Register as 21 April 1890 but she was actually born in 1899.

The correct date of 21.4.99 was written in above along with the initials Z.I.B.

I mentioned this on a post I did a couple of years ago (it's near the bottom of the first page):

So what happened to Margery Rigby – the girl who added the family cat to the Census? - (spoiler I couldn’t find too much) | Mumsnet

This post was prompted by the comment from {mention:CaptainMyCaptain} ^"Love it! I wonder what that child went on to do in life."^ A quick recap:...

Thanks, an AI app I queried it with suggested it might stand for 'address altered' or 'amended' with the 'Y' just being a fancy, serif-y slash mark/solidus. I thought it might stand for some exciting war posting with a medical corps!
