Found on a great grandparents hints 1900. Clearly sent to prison but what for?

What does this mean?

Could be like a suspended sentence? So they were charged with something, then reoffended

Breach of crimes act. The 9cm HL is most likely a distinguishing feature like a scar or something. It doesn't say what crime the person commited.

Edited as I misread.

@Fraughtmum You could try searching for records in the British Newspaper Archive. A local paper may well have covered court records and trials.

I found the inquest records of a distant ancestor's murder on there.

9 cm hl could be 9 calendar months hard labour

Not likely to be a measurement in cm in 1900!
Agree with previous poster. Most likely 9 calendar months hard labour.

Just had a look online and can only find a 1900 Crimes Act in Australia. Was this the UK? It's an odd wording if so.

You would need to provide rather more context than just that one line.

Preferably the name of the original source document, or just a redacted copy of the image that this comes from.

What country does this come from?

Google AI which I can’t post here brings up a lot.
