Transcribed as Macia, but no birth or death record, yet she is only on one census. I assume she died in that decade but there is no information anywhere that I can find.

What do you think this name is ?

I'd say Maria - the r and a are the same as in Catharine

StrongGirlsLift · 26/02/2026 17:50

Is it not Maris?
(edited to add: Maria makes way more sense 🤦‍♀️)

schmalex · 26/02/2026 17:50

Maria

Fgfgfg · 26/02/2026 17:50

Maria? The a and the r are similar in Catherine

minipie · 26/02/2026 17:51

Maria is by far the most likely!

ProfessorBinturong · 26/02/2026 17:51

Another vote for Maria.

muddyford · 26/02/2026 17:59

Maria or possibly Mavis?

Pieceofpurplesky · 26/02/2026 18:03

Maria Lloyd

HugoThatway · 26/02/2026 18:04

Ma_ia. The middle letter doesn't match the r in Catharine.

1000StrawberryLollies · 26/02/2026 18:05

Maria

Geneticsbunny · 26/02/2026 18:12

Mavis?

StripedVase · 26/02/2026 18:31

I would say it's Maria - the way of writing r is the same as the one in Catharine below if you disregard what looks like a tiny flaw in the printing/copying. That's not a v so it isn't Mavis; I can't see it as a c either; Maris is possible but v rare as a UK (assuming it's UK) first name compared to Maria.

ExOptimist · 26/02/2026 18:32

It's Maria using a copperplate r.

TheoreticallyAdult · 26/02/2026 18:34

Maria!

MabelAnderson · 26/02/2026 18:35

Yes, UK , Wales. I don’t know why Maria didn’t occur to me! She is down as Macia in all the trees I’ve found as they have clearly followed the transcription. I will see what I can find re Maria and report back. There is no similar name in the next census with her family, and she seemed too young to be elsewhere, but I will do a browse now.

@ExOptimist , the r in Catharine uses a copperplate r but the first one doesn't.

@MabelAnderson , it looks like Macia to me.

It is a copperplate r in Maria, it's just that in the photographing of the image there's a white dot on part of the downstroke which makes it look separate. The stroke that joins it to the next letter is the same as the one in Catherine.

It's not a c, if it was it would be rounder and the joining stroke to the next letter would be at a different angle.

I've been doing genealogy for 40 odd years and have seen a lot of handwritten old documents!

HugoThatway · 26/02/2026 18:56

@ExOptimist , it's definitely not a copperplate r on my device.
The r in Catharine is definitely a copperplate r on my device.

Here's a copperplate R
Rr — Loops & Tails

The r in the first name in the photo doesn't match the weight of the upwards stroke.

Agree - or the pen dried up a bit on the downstroke so that stroke is broken

It’s not copperplate. Copperplate is a very particular style. It’s cursive, designed for speed.

I think I have found a birth certificate for Maria on GRO, right year etc. I’ve ordered it so will see if it’s her and report back . I agree it must be Maria.
