Ancestory a scam?

Brightlittlecanary · 08/01/2026 19:12

Hi

does anyone have any insight into ancestory please? I am starting to think it’s a scam, I paid for urgent delivery which was two days, it took 11, when I asked for a refund in the shipping they ignored me, no response to date. I mailed my sample in nearly five weeks ago, with priority processing and it’s not even marked as received.

I am going to contact my credit card company as they don’t respond to emails, have just taken my money and done nothing except standard mail a sample bottle, which I’ve paid it seems a hundred pounds for.

the whole thing feels a massive waste of my time so I need to do a charge back, has anyone else found them to be just a scam organisation?

They are the biggest company, and therefore have the biggest database of possible relatives to match you with.

I've found them to be very good.

Sure, if it's what you want or if you don't know who your relatives are.

YellowPixie · 08/01/2026 22:43

do you mean Ancestry? As in genealogy? Definitely not a scam. Afaik their European test kits if that’s what you ordered are dispatched from and returned to Dublin.

do you knows anything about genealogy?

YellowPixie · 08/01/2026 22:46

Also, the start of January is absolutely the peak time for people sending in DNA kits they got for Christmas.

BoredZelda · 08/01/2026 22:47

This happened to me. My sample went missing, and despite letting them know it hasn’t been received, and clicking th thing for them to send me another one, I ever received it. I emailed, tried their chat thing, but no-one ever responded.

changednamforthis · 08/01/2026 22:59

I’ve been waiting a similar time to you and there’s nothing to suggest it’s been posted (and I posted it at end November). I’m just going to give it another couple of weeks then chase it up

Priority mail when you order.

That’s 2 days to ship, not deliver.

Iceshine · 08/01/2026 23:13

Its not something id do as i dont want my DNA online.

I had mine done by them several years ago (and it did take about 6 weeks for the results).
It's been an amazing revelation and insight into the lives of my very ordinary ancestors and how their lives were changed by the economic realities of the times (lots were involved in tin mining for instance and emigrated to the USA or Australia (or Wales) when the mines closed.)
A friend was reunited with the son she gave up for adoption when she was a teenager through ancestry, and my DH discovered his great-grandfather was a prolific and very unsuccessful burglar!

CherryRipe1 · 09/01/2026 18:49

My first sample took ages and was a dud for some unknown reason. They sent another test foc and it took a few weeks but was ok this time. It's definitely legit.

Brightlittlecanary · 09/01/2026 19:16

Well I was too busy at work today to chat them, but still no response, no update.

They’re definitely not a scam company

Their processing does take weeks though. My Mom did hers last year and it took over 6 weeks before there was any movement/update on her account

Brightlittlecanary · 09/01/2026 21:43

Whoop they got the sample! We have progress,,,

Yep we’ve been a member for 20 years no problems

TennesseeWaterfall · 09/01/2026 22:02

Mine was posted on 6th December, arrived last week, and now 6-8 weeks processing.

All the time the membership I've paid for is running out.

Agree about the membership fee. Can you build your tree in the meantime @TennesseeWaterfall, it helps to have names on a linked tree as they will be flagged up in any trees of your matches, and common ancestors will be highlighted.
Glad they have finally received your sample @Brightlittlecanary. It's the worst time of year unfortunately - double whammy of slow Christmas post and a huge increase in sales from the BF and Christmas offers.

dnadiscoveryquery · 10/01/2026 00:10

Just be prepared for what the results might say. It opened a whole can of worms for me that I never in my wildest dreams imagined. Now I’m stuck with a huge secret that I never wanted, just because I enjoyed family history. It’s honestly been such an upheaval.

Just prepare yourself for anything!

they are a legit company, but this is most definitely the busiest time of year. You normally find matches come through in feb and march, from people who’ve bought for Black Friday and Christmas.

Brightlittlecanary · 10/01/2026 09:26

Thanks , yes bad time of year I guess and maybe slow processing times. I’m the same I also paid for a subscription. But I’ve done a bit now stalled, so waiting for the results.

sorry @dnadiscoveryquery you had a shock, I think I’m prepared for they will find absolutely nothing to something horrible !

CherryRipe1 · 10/01/2026 12:41

I had a couple of shocks in my family tree. When your subscription expires you lose a lot of info if you don't renew but it comes back when you do renew. I screenshotted some of my stuff. They periodically give you cheap offers on membership eg £5 a month as it's probably better to get something out of us than nothing,! My cousin in America told me it's run by very business savvy Mormons!?

Nevermind17 · 10/01/2026 12:49

I’ve been on Ancestry for about 15 years now, and had a DNA test which has been really invaluable in building my tree.

However I am getting really disillusioned by them lately. There are so many more hints now, and when you click on them it’s not merely that you have to upgrade your membership to see them them, they’re now asking you to subscribe to other websites to read them. I’m certainly not paying £25 a month just to read a newspaper article that may or may not be about my three times great uncle.

Brightlittlecanary · 10/01/2026 15:35

It does seem very money focused and sell sell sell. Whuch would be fine if they also delivered, but so far my experience has been very poor indeed.

pay for priority posting of my sample bottle to me. Get it 11 days later, so normal sending.
pay for priority processing, takes a month for them to even say they have received it.

I did this early Mid November, on a whim, paid extra, and here I am two months later with nothing to show for it even though I paid for priority and my six months subscription running out fast.

I can’t even find myself in their records, and I know full well my name and birthdate and location are correct, I have my birth certicate.

AInightingale · 10/01/2026 15:37

Where were you born @Brightlittlecanary? If it was England, that is odd.

Usernumber36373647323 · 12/01/2026 20:05

Posted my partners from the UK last year and it did take 5 weeks to get there but once they received it, the results came though a couple weeks later so it moves quickly once they receive it in my experience. When I did mine a couple years ago, it took about 3 weeks to get there.

I think they say it can take 6 weeks to receive them and also it’s a busy time of year because people bought them on Black Friday discounts or Christmas presents.

I have never had a problem with ancestry as a whole. I love family history and finding new relatives and ancestry is the best service imo.

ClaredeBear · 12/01/2026 20:31

Yeah, it takes around 6 weeks, most do.

Brightlittlecanary · 12/01/2026 22:17

Scotland. But nothing, for me or my husband or child. I’d have thought there would be something. Bizzarely they can find my grandfather, also born in Scotland,

it now says sample received , but not yet moved to processing.
