Old family photos

I’m clearing out the loft of the family home after my Mum’s death, and found a box of photos from my Dad’s family. I don’t know anything about my Dad’s family, so this was interesting, particularly as my Dad has named everyone and written the relationship to him, which will help with the family tree.

Anyway, there were two photos in a sealed envelope in the box. I opened it, and there are two photos, one of my great great gran and one of her brother. The studio is in London, and they are both dressed up in their finery. And they are both very clearly mixed race. My Dad had always said that his Dad’s family came from London and his Mum’s from Sussex. These two are from his Mum’s side. I’m now desperate to know who they were and how they got here. Looking at other family members, they all look white (though my Dad looked Mediterranean/Middle Eastern), although with this knowledge, my great gran definitely has black features (nose shape, mouth, hair) from photos, but looks completely white. They have a very common surname, so not sure how easy they will be to trace.

have you looked on sites like Ancestry to do a family tree? might be worth doing a DNA doing a family tree will bring things to light that you may not know its good the photos were labelled as lots are not

Definitely do the Ancestry DNA. My brother did it and found long lost relatives we never knew existed. It will also tell you your heritage/race percentage. It’s absolutely fascinating.

Ancestry will probably have a free weekend over Christmas, they normally have one over the holidays. Start with your Dad and work backwards. There will be census returns with them on for the 1921, 1911, 1901, 1891 etc going backwards, There place of birth should be on there. London records are especially good. Good luck!

Thank you - not sure about doing a DNA test for this, but am researching my Mum’s family tree on Ancestry (which has been equally fascinating). Will have a think about it!

See if you can find any trace of them on census records. Those tell you the place of birth. Is it possible that any of your ancestors was a seafarer or anything to do with the East India Company?
