Does anyone know anything about heraldry?

I was reading a bit about a family I was tracing and found out that in a small church in Gloucestershire there are a couple of this family buried in the floor of the church.

The monumental slabs show the arms of the family. They are described as "Quarterly of four: first and fourth, a fess engrailed between three annulets braced together; second and third, a chevron between three garbs"

Doing a bit of digging, I can work out what I think the chevron and garbs look like (image attached), but I'm having some trouble understanding the other bit.

Can anyone help with the "fess engrailed" bit?

The source that I got this from also wrote "I have been unable to determine the tinctures or to identify that family from whom the X's acquired this quartering."

I think tinctures refers to what colours are used?

Can anyone suggest some helpful books to read, or any other sources, that might be helpful in looking into this a bit more? Or just starting off with the whole heraldry thing?

Your go-to is the Royal College of Arms website. They have an email too and can help with the terms etc.

A fess is a horizontal bar across the middle of a shield, engrailed refers to the fact that it has a series of small indentations rather than a smooth edge. Annulets as the names suggests are intertwined rings. Tinctures are the colours used (there are 5 colours used and 2 metals (silver and gold). Used to love heraldry! College of Arms may be able to tell you the family and the original tinctures
