How to…?

My adult daughter has found searching for our family history a fascinating new hobby.

Many years ago, I did a load of research, but so long ago I was actually sitting in basements looking at ledgers and microfiches. The details I do have in digital format are on a floppy disc. Yeah, that old!

Two questions:

DD can’t afford all the subscription sites that seem to be available for looking further. If there is one key site to use, what would it be?

And how can I get all my old research transferred from Family Tree Maker (as it was) to something she can use?

I don’t have time to enter it all again, but I did get quite a way back so it would ultimately save her a load of time.

You should be able download your data from Familytree Maker as a GEDCOM file and import that to somewhere like Ancestry.

Ancestry is probably the best and can be accessed for free from most libraries. There are also offers on subscriptions now and then.

Thank you. I don’t have the data, apart from an ancient backup I discovered after posting. Thankfully I didn’t need to buy a floppy disk drive for it!

DD managed to find a way to open it, so now all the mysteries of my ancestry are now available to her. She’s thrilled and spent the whole day messaging me snippets I’d long forgotten.

I’ll look for Ancestry offers and gift it to her when I can. Appreciate the tip.
