It looks like Ballyfermot, but that's Dublin

TheCryingTheBitchAndTheFloordrobe · 02/08/2025 19:33

Second one looks like Conlig

Pieceofpurplesky · 02/08/2025 19:36

It's a list of 'Bally' villages. Conlig is near Bangor.

Where did the marriage actually take place? Chances are that the places of residence will be within a few miles of there.

Newtownards in County Down in 1865.

I assumed they were local but can’t find their births in that area.

Ballyhalbert?

MadameDeveria · 02/08/2025 20:48

@LadeOde That’s a lot closer to where they got married. But not sure there’s an ‘h’ in the writing. I’ll investigate a bit more

Was the groom from a farming or rural background? There are a lot of 'townlands' in Northern Ireland and even local people aren't aware of their names. There are flippin dozens of them! Townlands in Co. Down.

@AInightingale Thank you! There are a lot of Townlands starting Bally!

He was a Labourer which is nice and vague 😀

There is a townland called Ballybarnes between Newtownards and Conlig. Does it look like that? There is a Ballybarnes Road in modern-day Newtownards which is the only reason I've heard of it.

What age is the groom ?
I can’t make it out at all !
The person filling in the form should be sacked - too late now 😀- their writing is illegible.
I too thought Ballyfermot but can’t find another letter f on the cert to compare.
