It's an Italian chef at a hotel in Sheffield in 1921. I cannot make out his name. Can anyone help please? Thank you so much in anticipation!

Clunto Bidries? Chunto? Not an easy one!

FloraBotticelli · 24/07/2025 18:02

Duarto or Duarte perhaps? Can’t make out the surname

Onetimeusername1 · 24/07/2025 18:03

My guess would be Ricardo? The first letter looks like an R. Do you have more of the census to compare letters from other names?

FloraBotticelli · 24/07/2025 18:03

Duarto Biones?

IMissSparkling · 24/07/2025 18:06

Surname looks like Bianci? Could be a misspelling of Bianchi?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 24/07/2025 18:08

Ricarto Bianco.

The t matches the one in Italy.

ETA: it might be transcribing as heard, rather than the real spelling, as Candelo is spelled Condelo, so Ricardo Bianco might be traceable to the village itself.

Have a close look at the other entries on the same page, and see whether you can gain any clues from the lettering shapes of other names and places which are obvious and that you can read. Sometimes that helps to figure out the person's handwriting style.

Which census year is it?

NightPuffins · 24/07/2025 18:19

I’d guess Lunto Bianco

Tuningfork · 24/07/2025 18:38

Could it be Renato?

Could it be Renato?

Looks like Renato to me.

Delphigirl · 24/07/2025 18:46

I think that first letter is Q. Quinto Bianes?

Pinkywoo · 24/07/2025 18:47

I think the second word is Bione, which is an Italian surname. The first looks like Lunto but that isn't a name, possibly a misspelling?

Temporale · 24/07/2025 18:49

The name is Quinto and he is from Candelo, in Piemonte. I looked at an online phone directory, but no surname starting with BI in Candelo seems to match. There's another i towards the end, possibly "ries" or "rier". Not uncommon for Italian surnames in the North to end with an "r".

No, they are all English. But I can I guess compare the writing.

My guess (as a native Italian speaker) is Quinto Bianchi.

Edited

I think this may be right.

Others have mentioned looking at how the other names are written on the same census form - and this is always the first step.

Unfortunately, in this case, it looks like different people entered their own details. There appears to be three different hands who have completed this census (as well as the enumerator).

There is Mr & Mrs Simpson done in one hand. There is then people described as their son and daughter (but in another hand, I would guess that was the enumerator, it has been added that they are the step-son and granddaughter).

Then there is Ricarto in another hand. It looks like Ricarto wrote his own entry, well, at least his name and place of birth. It looks like his occupation and employer may have been added by the step-son and the address of his employer by the enumerator.

His surname does look like Bianco, but it may also be Biane.

[EDIT]

Although,as @LemonCookie8 said, the first name could equally be Quinto

GreenCandleWax · 24/07/2025 19:10

The first name looks like Lunito which is an Italian family name. Not sure about the B name, but could that be the forename? Some cultures put the surname first.

rohn · 24/07/2025 20:40

Renato Bidne?

AdaColeman · 24/07/2025 20:50

Guido Bianco?

Ellmau · 24/07/2025 21:38

I think Quinto, then possible Bione.

MeMeMeMeOw · 25/07/2025 11:11

Thanks everyone, lots to think about!

Asked Italian DH. He said first name is defo Quinto, a name usually given to the 5th son. Second word looks like Bionie & the place could be Candelo.

NamefromNowhere · 25/07/2025 13:31

The first name looks like Claudio.

C8H10N4O2 · 25/07/2025 18:18

Not a native speaker but agree with Quinto Bianchi - I’ve come across a couple of Italian and Spanish Quintos.
