I wondered if anybody could help me decipher a name?

It's from the 1920 US Census and it's a girl's name that looks as though it starts with a C or an A or possibly an O and ends with a d.

Unhelpfully, the transcript gives the name as "Edward" despite the child being shown as the granddaughter.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've included a few of the lines above and below to give an idea of the handwriting, the names shown are:

John W Kennon
Minnie
Clarence
Florence
Alec Billingsley
[Unknown name]
Clarence
Velma
George Alderson
Ida

Any ideas?

The first name next to arrow is Edward. I'm pretty sure. It says Florence is a grandson as well?
Maybe those two got mixed up?

foreverbasil · 21/08/2024 13:56

I think it is Edward. The E is like reverse 3 going up into the L of Billingsley. Granddaughter may be an error, or it may be a 'boy named Sue' situation. It's not that unusual these days to get girls called Sean or James, I know of both. I'm not sure how common it was then. I certainly haven't seen it before.

Florence can be male or female. Not unusual for Irish men of a certain generation to be called Florence.

Bellringers4 · 21/08/2024 13:58

As another poster has said, it says grandson next to Florence, so I think this is just a clerical error and they've mixed the two up. I can't read it as anything but Edward.

Angharad was my first thought before I read any responses, but now I can see Edward too

It is Edward, I've tried (on my phone, badly 😬) to outline

I think the one underneath Alec Billingsley is Clarence, not Florence.

sleekcat · 21/08/2024 14:04

I mean the one above Velma, not directly under

Itsybitsytitsy · 21/08/2024 14:09

I get Angharad ? And Clarence

Houseplanter · 21/08/2024 14:16

A second Clarence rather than Florence for me too

Thank you everyone for your help. Yes it does look as though it's definitely Edward.

Whoever completed the form I guess must have just mistakenly put granddaughter instead of grandson.

@foreverbasil

"The E is like reverse 3 going up into the L of Billingsley."

@spiderdave

"I've tried (on my phone, badly 😬) to outline"

Thank you both. I totally missed that bit going up into the line above. Now that it's been pointed out to me, it is so obvious.
