My ( Mum’s Father’s parents ) Great Grandparents’ marriage details 😄
There was a 150 year anniversary celebration at my village church yesterday, by a complete fluke the Verger had pulled a book from the County records office that included 1885 weddings.

Interestingly, my GGM was down as a Spinster, she already had 4 Children when she married my GGF, who was a Widower with a young Son and they had 4 other children together, including my Grandad, born in 1891 and died in 1955, 10 years before I was born.
GGF died young in 1900, she died in 1936.
I was married in the same church 100 years later 🙂
I had no idea about the link with the Village, neither did my older relatives, until quite recently.

I’m still trying to find where they were buried.

I always find it really interesting looking at the original documents rather than just seeing scanned images online.

I've been to a couple of different county archives (they usually seem to be in a local library) and it's so totally different seeing the actual document in front of you instead of just an image on a screen.

And there are still plenty of records that haven't been scanned so you have to go and physically look for the records if you want to see them.

Having said that, here is another copy of William and Martha's marriage entry courtesy of FindMyPast:

"I’m still trying to find where they were buried."

You seem to know when they died and in which city?

In that case you need to find out where the local "Register of Burials" for that area and that time period are kept.

It is likely that they will be in the local archives which are often held in the main library in that area. Local archives often have an online catalogue so that you can see if they have the documents you're looking for. Alternatively, you can just give them a call or pop in to see them.

You will probably need to make an appointment to go and actually view them though, as the archivist will need to get them out from wherever they are stored.

If you have a rough idea of the date of death then that will save you a lot of time looking through the Register as you can just go to the relevant time period.

The burial register will typically give you the name, age, occupation, date of death, place where death occurred, place of burial, date of burial and person who performed the burial ceremony.

But typically you have to do this old school and actually go to the archives and look at the actual document in real life rather than doing it online.

Also, the archives may also hold copies of local newspapers. If you search the local newspapers around the date of burial then you may well find obituaries there.

It's a slow Sunday afternoon so I thought I'd just do a bit of digging online.

"I’m still trying to find where they were buried."

William is difficult to track down but I think I've found where Martha is buried, you will be able to track down her grave from the Burial Register.

"...she died in 1936."

Are you entirely sure about this? I can't find any record of her dying in 1936 but there are records of a Martha Flattley, the widow of William, dying in 1931.

I've attached a copy of the obituary of the woman who I believe may be your GGM. It comes from the Evening Sentinel of 24 October 1931, page 3, column 6. It reads:

FLATTLEY: On Oct 22nd of 7 Cotton Street, Newcastle. Martha, beloved wife of the late William Flattley, aged 79 years. Interment at Newcastle Cemetery, Tuesday 3 o'clock. Relatives and friends kindly accept this intimation. Inquiries, Salt and Son, Funeral Directors, Newcastle Tel 67073

You will be able to find her in the Burial Register at the local archives it appears that she was buried on 27th October 1931. There are online resources, such as here:

https://www.staffordshireburials.org.uk/cgi/gravematch.cgi?graveref=NL%3a7%3a94

which indicate that she is buried in Block 94 of Newcastle Cemetery:

Hopefully this is the correct person.

Oh my goodness, thank you so much!
That’s my Martha, I must have written down 1936 or I can’t read my own writing.
My village cemetery had a lot of gravestones removed so William might well have been buried there.
Apparently burial records are held at the new Keele cemetery so I need to make an appointment to go and look.
