How to "define" relationship

I'm trying to put together a short summary of some family history, from my perspective - as in, X was my grandfather, Y was my great-grandfather, and Z was my great-grandfather's brother.

How do I summarise the latter relationship? Great-granduncle? I was hoping there might be some sort of term to use rather than a long string of words!

I think that's the American term. I had never hear that expression until I joined Ancestry. In the U.K. it would be great-great uncle.

Maybe look into it to be sure, and to be consistent. I have a newspaper article from 1893 talking about another ancestor from Cumberland taking over the business of his ‘grand-uncle’.

But in the 19th century son-in-law was frequently used to mean stepson. Terms change.

Thanks to all pps. I'm going with great-great Uncle. The 'grand' bit is too confusing and makes me think of Grandparent.
