Getting a death certificate with limited information

Hello, I am hoping someone can answer my question. I just called my local register office but it directed me to the website, which didn't have the answer, so I have gone around in a circle.

I think someone has died. I know her date of birth, maiden name, and the names of all three husbands and rough dates of marriages, precise in one case. She could have died in one of two places fairly locally. That's all I have to go on. I tried to get one online on gro.gov.uk but as I didn't have the GRO reference I couldn't order one.

How long ago did the person die?

Recently. I know she was alive last summer, so it is within the last 14 months or so.

You’d likely have to pay them to do a search as it’s not just asking for a certificate, it’s asking them to search if there is one.

have you tried looking for an obituary? Many newspapers and the likes put them all online.

I have tried online searching for an obituary but nothing comes up at all.

You might get some luck looking at probate records - see https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/ -I'm not sure how soon after the death they publish the details and of course the executors may not have applied for probate yet...

Search probate records for documents and wills (England and Wales)

Are you sure they’ve died rather than moved or gone into a care home or the likes?

Thanks for these. Not sure about the home - may try that option. She was 80 so it is a possibility.

you could check the electoral register to see if this lady was on that, it is usually taken twice a year

check her address to see if she is still living there

as others have said try probate search, though probate can take time and there isn't a time restrain

she could have entered a nursing home, sheltered accommodation etc

her death would be registered in the local district that she died in - so for example if she live in your local district (for example Solihull)but was in another city hospital for example QE2 hospital) and died - then her death would be registered at that district. The deaths within a year are not usually on the GRO indexes

why do you think she may have died?
