My mum is extremely interested in genealogy and, has managed to find out a great deal about her family.
She has mentioned in the past that she would like to take a DNA test, but that's as far as it went.
I have been racking my brain to think of a Christmas present and have decided on that.
I just don't know which one to order ....

In my extremely limited experience ! Mine was a gift through Ancestry, but I’ve been able to upload the data to MyHeritage, which I’m finding is a better site for my research, so I’d say go with the best price!

Ancestry. Hands down. The family trees are much better on ancestry, you can see which matches are parent 1 and 2 with a subscription and far more people have tested there.
With ancestry she can upload her results to my heritage if she wants.
23 and me is only worth doing if she is looking to solve a particular family mystery.
What a fab present!

23&Me, wait til Black Friday and they’ll likely be cheaper.

Ancestry if she's in the UK as they have the largest database of users to match with.

She can then download those details to other databases but you can't do it the other way around.

Drop me a PM if you need help with any surprise results. It's my area of expertise :)

Also do listen to The Gift podcast on BBC sounds

Agree that Ancestry is the best.

The kits are all the same, they all use the same science, no one is better at extracting your DNA than any other kit. Where the companies differ is their database.

Ancestry has historically been more popular than other websites like 23 and Me or MyHeritage in the UK so has a bigger database. You are therefore more likely to get martches.

Ancestry will not allow you to look for matches on its database unless you have taken one of their tests. They will however allow you to download your data and then you can use that to look for matches on MyHeritage or other sites like Gedmatch.

Usual caveats to your mum about being prepared to find relatives she didn't know about.

And second the PP's suggestion about listening to The Gift on BBC Sounds Wink
