Ownership of grave plot

I've found the grave of my dad's dad and he's buried with his parents.
There was no will as they were all poor so I'm guessing ownership if the plot goes to the next of kin.

My Dad has one elder sibling. Does the plot belong to her? If so, once she passes, does the plot go to my dad or to one of her children? She won't be getting buried in it as she lives at the other end of the country.

There isn't even a grave marker, never mind grave stone so it's obviously been left and nobody is interested in it.

I was told that it goes down the line so yes, she would own it.
You would need everyone before you to say they don’t want ownership, if you want to take it.

Is it in a church graveyard or a municipal cemetery? There will be official records being kept, so approach either the minister of the parish or the local council burial committee. There is usually some sort of notice board at the entrance which give details. If you live too far away, find the contact details of a local funeral director and they might be able to point you in the right direction.

Not all brave plots are owned by the families though, especially if they were poor.

And even if they did buy it, it might only be for 60 years or 100 years or whatever; not necessarily in perpetuity (forever).

And if you do own it you should have a deed or faculty confirming this.
