I'm trying to decipher the surname of James and wife Hannah.

Maybe Stirt or Skist or similar? Street?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Can anyone help me with deciphering a name?

Strut? (Although I’ve only ever seen it spelled with a double t at the end Strutt.)

This is Sussex - and looking back through the census data it's interesting to see how many of the families from 200 years ago are still part of the local community.

Can't find any deaths for a James or Hannah Strut(t) that would fit, but thanks for the idea.

Street or Skeet. Or maybe Skist. I don't think it starts with H - because of the difference with the H in Hannah.
One tip with old census sheets like this is to check for similar looking letters in other names - not just on that sheet, but ones before and after. If you are on Ancestry, you can go backwards and forwards from this sheet with an arrow, and look at how the enumerator wrote their letters in other names.
Another tip is to look for the same people on other censuses (10 years apart), which often clarifies the correct name.

Could it be Jane's S Hurst or Hunt? I'm looking in my phone so came zoom in ad much as I'd like.
One way forward migjt be to try checking the transcription for this entry, and also looking back 10 years to the previous census see if you can find them again, in a different hand.

Thanks for the input, I did try looking at other sheets to get an idea of the handwriting but it didn’t help. Suspect they were itinerant agricultural workers, couldn’t find them in subsequent census records.

If you want to let me have the details of the year and area you looked at to find this info, I'm happy to do a bit of digging.

That’s kind of you but we wrapped up the project a while ago - thanks anyway.
