I'm struggling a bit with this marriage certificate. I think I've got most of the details right but not everything.
It's the bottom one on the record, John Dick and Agnes McLean. I can't work out Agnes' job, something beginning with S? Struggling with mothers' maiden names also.
I think Agnes' father is Duncan McLean, I'm guessing his occupation is maker of something, we have a few nail makers in the family at that time. But curiously her death certificate shows her father as Archibald McLean, crofter.

You'd think registrars would have to follow some kind of standard handwriting pattern, this one's beautiful but a nightmare for me to read!

Thank you for your fresh eyes

Does Agnes have an occupation? Looks to me like 'Spinster'.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 21/05/2023 09:21

That's a nightmare 😂

He's an iron nail maker, she's a domestic servant (abbreviated to svt).

DisplayPurposesOnly · 21/05/2023 09:22

Oh yes, she's a spinster but I think he's a widower.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 21/05/2023 09:24

I think Agnes's mum was Catherine McGregor

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 21/05/2023 09:24

Ah, the line above the bracket - yes, domestic svt (or vampire vet).

DisplayPurposesOnly · 21/05/2023 09:30

John's mum was Margaret (abbreviated to Margt) but not sure on maiden name - M or H... field?

Ah, the line above the bracket - yes, domestic svt (or vampire vet).

Oh please let her be a vampire vet. Pretty much everyone I've found so far has been a labourer or miner.
Who gave this guy a job writing important historical records anyway?

I think Catherine McLean may have been previously McGregor.

ShinyPikachu · 21/05/2023 13:30

The maiden surnames look like Meikle and McGregor to me.

1871 Marriages in the Parish of Stirling in the Burgh of Stirling.

on the Seventh day of April at Stirling, after Banns according to the norms of the Church of Scotland.

John DICK, Iron bolt maker, (widower). 38. St Ninians, Stirling. Father - John DICK, nail maker. Mother- Margt DICK, ms MEIKLE

Agnes McLEAN, domestic ser (spinster). 30. Father - Duncan McLEAN, boiler maker jn. Mother - Catherine McLEAN, ms McGREGOR.

Notes - can't make out the parish of the bride's residence. Looks like Rhins of Milton, Parish of --ontan but that doesn't match any local parish names.

Margt = Margaret

ms = maiden surname so you know the mothers of the two were Margaret Meikle and Catherine McGregor before they married (Scottish marriage certs are amazing for this details)

jn = journeyman, someone employed as a boiler maker, not running their own business.

I look at these sorts of certificates ALL the time, they're not that hard to read once you get your eye in. The digitisation can be an issue because of the ink/paper, if the bride's parish name is a critical detail then i'd advise contacting Scotland's People and asking for a clearer image, they are usually very helpful. Or will tell you what it says.

Also meant to add that from that you can also glean that the parents of the bride and groom were all alive at the time of the marriage or they’d have been listed as (deceased)
