If you open on the desktop version, they have a typed transcript of the census entries. Sometimes it’s not right but it’ll give you a better idea.

I’d say hosier too.

I see florist written in cursive script. If you look at a cursive alphabet the r (looks a bit like an "n" without the first down stroke) and the s match well.

Definitely a capital "H" rather than lower case "f" plus "l" I think.

Fifth letter is def an "e" not an "s".

Surely that's ich at the end!

It looks like Florich - could be a misspelling.

Is it in English? And what is the column heading?

The penultimate letter is an S, there's an ink clot where the pen has swept back on itself. This wouldn't happen with an E. However the final letter looks more like an H than a T. I'd say the first letter is an F. There are two occupation listings for "Housemaid" and the H in both those is formed differently to the one in question. If you look at other words on the form plus later and earlier pages which carry the same letter it can help decipher the word. Also looking at an earlier or later census might help point the way.

It’s definitely English if you look at the other entries, yes. Housemaid, Lady’s maid, Parlourmaid, Cook, Boots and possibly Mantua maker.

It’s not that dissimilar from my grandmother’s handwriting in earlier letters. She was born in 1901. Which census is this?
