My DD is really interested in finding out about her DNA break down. It's her birthday soon and I thought about buying her a 23andme kit. But is the best kit to try? What gives the most amount of information and which is the best company to go with?

Assuming you are based in the UK, Ancestry. Definitely.

Few reasons :

Ancestry has the biggest UK-based database so you are more likely to get matches.

23 and Me was set up as a health testing genetics company (Do I have the gene which makes me more vulnerable to X?) and from what you say this is not what your daughter is interested in.

You can take your raw data from Ancestry and upload it into other genealogy sites. Ancestry, on the other hand, does not accept uploads from other sites.

What I would wonder is that you are mentioning that your daughter is interested in finding her "DNA breakdown". If you mean the ethnicity estimate telling you that you're 20% German, 15% Irish and so on, this is really just a bit of fun and not very scientific at all. It's just a general indication of where your ancestors may have come from and not precise - for example my dad's ancestors came from Northumberland but the Ancestry circle for Scotland covers all of Scotland, northern England, Isle of Man and a good chunk of N Ireland too. It's interesting, but should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Came on to reply with Ancestry. I downloaded results file and then uploaded to My Heritage. The others accept uploaded files too. The only close matches I have are from ancestry.
