I have found out an unknown half sisters name and birth year, but as she may be living there is limited information available via social networking sites. The birth was in India during WW2 and know both parents names. I think the child was adopted but although I have scanned the shipping records to Uk I can find no record. Any ideas, experts? I guess the next thing might be DNA but not sure which would be best

Few ideas -

these people www.fibis.org/ Family in British India Society are fabulous and real experts. Mainly concentrating on 19th century records but are certainly a strong starting point .

Have you looked for a death for her in India? She perhaps never came back

Shipping records - good starting point, but you need to know what name you are looking for. A Susan Jones adopted by the Smith family won't be Susan Jones on a passenger list. Also you will often see "Mrs Smith + three children" which is hardly helpful.

DNA is a useful tool, would depend on who else has tested and how confident you are working with the results and sorting matches - the testing sites can never say "this is your cousin" or similar, just tell you how much DNA you have in common.

DNA is an obvious potential way forward.

Also worth considering:

Contact Register, which is government approved

Thank you for that info. Fibis are great on people who are not alive…and have helped with suggestions. Will think about pursuing the dna and other suggestion as all I want really is to provide her with info if she wants it.
