Second cousin or first cousin once removed?

What is the difference? Is there one? I read:

A second cousin is a someone who shares a great-grandparent with you
and
Your cousin's child is your first cousin once removed

Aren't these the same? Cousins share grandparents, first cousins once removed share great grandparents.

I am confused.

I don’t shade great-grandparents with my first cousin once removed. Their great-grandmother is my grandmother.

My cousin’s children and my children are second cousins. My cousin’s children and me are first cousins once removed. The once removed bit is where there’s a generational difference.

A removed is a different generation.

My first cousins daughter is my first cousin once removed.
My grandchild is the second cousin of my sisters grandchild. Or first cousins children are second cousins.

Second cousins are the same generation as you. Removes are a different generation. So you share great grand parents with your second cousin but you are both great grandchildren. Your cousin's child is removed from you because you're different generations (so you and your cousin share a grandparent but to your cousin's child, they are a great grandparent)

Your cousins child will have different great grandparents to you.

Eg my gran is my cousins child's great gran.

So my child and my cousins child share great grandparents = first cousins once removed.

Second cousin is my cousins child to me?

Sorry typing as the other replies came out.

So once removed is my cousins child. And second cousins are my child and my cousins child.

Exactly. If there is a difference in the number of steps back to the common ancestor that's where the "removed" comes in.
