Gibraltar military marriage records-dead end for the bride

my great great grandfather was in the Navy and got married in gibraltar in 1851.I got the marriage certificate from GRO military records but it just lists the bride and groom, no parents-his wife died of cholera a few years later when they were stationed in India, again the military records do not indicate any parents/place of birth.
I have no idea how to progress tracing my great great grandmothers family further and wonder how she came to be in Gibraltar. would she have likely been a daughter of a military family there, or could she have been from my GGFs hometown of Wigan? any tips really appreciated

Do you have her DOB? Any chance she has an unusual name?
If you have the dob , have a look at records for that around Wigan . I have no experience of military records, and I am in Scotland where we have some Scottish specific resources. But Ancestry gave me some clues when I needed to find a migrant.

her name is ordinary, birth year 1836. on the 1841 england census there are 3 matches but they are all still in england on the 1851/61 censuses . she was married 1851 in gibraltar

Have you looked up his ships at the National Archives? Are there muster rolls? Perhaps his wife was a passenger on his ship.

Were they married in a church there? Can you find the parish records? There might be witnesses not listed on the certificate you have.

Have you looked at newspaper records?

@hellosally Have you tried using Familysearch.org? You can search parish registers on that, and some of their records are worldwide. If you know her approximate year of birth, that might help. I was also wondering whether the Gibraltar records are searchable by surname, because you might come across people who could be her parents or siblings that way. Depends on how common the surname is, of course.

There's also GenesReunited. Someone else might be researching the same family.
