Can anyone help with Irish records

I have been trying and failing to find my grandads Birth certificate. He was born in Dublin in 1933/34 and moved over to England at some point and met my nan and married her in 1954.
I've got the marriage certificate but cannot find his birth certificate on the Irish records anywhere. It's driving me mad. It's like he didn't exist! My dad was adopted so he can't tell me much. Is there any kind of special company I can use who would find it for me ? I've tried putting his name in different ways, changed the year of birth etc but nothing comes up at all. I thought by getting the marriage certificate I could find out his dads name and go about it that way, but his dad had the same name lol. I'm no good at this stuff either don't really know what I'm doing. So I'm stuck !

I have friends who have used the English version of their names when they lived in England but their birth certificate had the original Irish version.

So if I put in the Irish version of his name it might help ?

Yes, it might help, you'll need to look for Irish versions of first name and surname and try different permutations. Good luck!

Im in Ireland. Irish spellings can be very subtly different. Are you sure his adopted name is his real name? Very often babies who were adopted had a name change. How do you have his dads name correct if you have no birth cert?

Sorry I misread- your dad was adopted? If so it will have your grandads name on his cert????

Yes my dad was adopted but was adopted in the family, his auntie adopted him. So we're sure of his dads name as his other brothers and sister had contact with him still.
I've also been told snippets of info like his birth place, birthday, sisters name etc. but I just can't find his birth record online

And we already have the marriage certificate which states his name on that, I'd have thought it would have to have been his proper name for the marriage to be legally recognised ?

Can you go sideways and search the records for the aunties or other family members? That might help.

Definitely this. Often looking at other members turns up a clue.

If you know where he was born could you get a baptismal cert? This could give more info.

My father was known as a different name from he one on his birth cert.

Quite often people where known by one name and registered/baptised another. The official name was usually a saints name and known as the Irish so for example James/Seamus, John/Eoin etc. I only found out my MILs real name recently and thats even more bizarre, she was born Mary after her mother but she was known as Maeve and somewhere along the line managed to get all her paperwork, passport, driving licence everything says Maeve, If you go a generation back I'd say the paperwork could be dodgier still.

I think the Irish birth records currently available free online are from 1864 to 1921. A birth in 1933/4 wouldn't show up.
I'm not at all an expert so I could be completely wrong about this, but I know I did a quick search for a relative born in 1941 before realising their date of birth wasn't available.

That refers to the online searchs available via IrishGenealogy.ie.

I had trouble locating my grandfathers birth certificate. A lovely chap on ancestry went to the records office to have a look for me… turns out although on the birth certificate the surname ended CE it had been recorded and referenced as EE (cursive writing)… so it may be worth a post on the ancestry website.

Another family member from Ireland uses their middle name… so they had a completely different name on their birth certificate!

Yes the Irish site is brilliant, you can see all the original records free of charge but they are privacy-restricted.

No point in searching as the records online only go to 1919 but click on contact us and email them to see what they suggest. They may be able to help you with a copy certificate, think they are 20 euros.

What year was he born? The records office in Dublin was one of the buildings destroyed in the 1916 Rising. It can cause some issues finding some old paperwork; you often have to rely on church records, which are sometimes hard to read, misspelt etc.

Yes, I think so, you won't find that year online.

It's so hard because my dad won't find out any info from his siblings for me who did have something to do with him. So I've literally got a name and a date of birth.
And the surname is one of the most common in Ireland

Contact the Register Office in Dublin and ask.
