Where do I start?

Need to find a marriage certificate but have no idea where to start. I have the first names, surnames and dates of birth of both people but no idea where they were married. They were married anytime from 2007 onwards but I can't be sure. Can anyone point me in the right direction it's all new to me!

What country are you in?

bedington · 16/01/2022 22:04

2007?

LIZS · 16/01/2022 22:09

Freebmd? Although not all areas are up to present day. Should give you the area. Quite recent though, so not really Genealogy.

In the UK - marriage more likely to be 2008 onwards. I thought freebmd only has records up to 2007, which why I need help

It's too recent for Freebmd. What other clues do you have - how do you know they were married? Do they have children- if so, where were they born/registered? Were they both born in the same area - of so, it's possible they married in that area.

I know they are likely to have been married in Essex, I know their dates of birth. I think they may not have married and I am being lied to to prevent an inheritance. I am one of the children of the male who has just died last week. It's a long story but I need to know the truth and no one will tell me so I need to find out for myself to put my mind at ease.

This is not genealogy....you may get a better response if you post elsewhere....legal perhaps?

Agree that this isn't really genealogy and that seeing a solicitor would be a good idea.

You can order recent birth, marriage and death certificates from the general register office (GRO) but you will need the reference number. They will not do the research for you. www.gov.uk/order-copy-birth-death-marriage-certificate

If you phone the registry office where you think the marriage was probably registered then you might find a friendly staff member who can help you. You could also go through this website

www.essexrecordoffice.co.uk/services/certificate-copies/

Give them as much information as you have - full names and the date and location of the wedding, dates of birth not as critical but useful. It will take at least three weeks though.

@MarshmallowFondant Thank you so much for your help - I really do appreciate your reply. I will get on the case!
