Hi if there is anyone on FamilySearch.org could you do me a huge favour please and check out someone for me.
I try to log in and make a complete mess of it every time. My username on it is pathetic and possibly outing so I am afraid to use it Sad
I am looking for a marriage between a Robert Clarke and a Susanna Brown or Susanna Moore - both born around 1834/1835, marriage 1863 in Antrim probably, Northern Ireland definitely - it would have been just Ireland then.
It's a big ask I know.
I am trying to clarify something for a relation of mine.
Many thanks in advancec

Hello
I have looked on Ancestry and I can find a marriage between Robert Clarke and Susanna Brown on 12 May 1863 in Ireland. There isn't much detail and I can't see the original record. It says his father was John Clarke.
I hope that helps!

shrugitoff · 01/11/2021 19:48

Yes thank you Saker. I too saw it on Ancestry but need to see the details on FamilySearch - it's the Church of Latter Day Saints website with lots of information.

My elderly neighbour has asked me to help her.
In the kingdom of the blind the one eyed (wo)man is king Smile
She isn't good with technology and thinks I am 🙄
I'm just slightly better than her.Blush

Oh sorry, I didn't realise that you wanted it particularly on FamilySearch. Is there a reason why? I can find it. The only additional information is that it is in County Monaghan.

Thank you @Saker.
That's great.
Is there any mention of others on it or what church it was ?
My neighbour thinks they were Presbyterians.

There is no other information that I can see associated with that record, it's as you see in the screenshot if you can read it. I can see if there's anything else I can find.

Saker · 02/11/2021 10:21

It's funny there seems to be a second record for the same marriage and date but says it is in Leinster.

Saker · 02/11/2021 10:23

And there is a child born in Leinster in 1872, suggesting that might be correct.

I think with FamilySearch if you want to see the original scanned records you have to go one of the Church of Latter Day Saints family research centres.

shrugitoff · 02/11/2021 11:16

Thank you.
She'll be delighted to see any bit of information.

So I've looked back on Ancestry and that finds the birth of their daughter Margaret also with the same dates etc but the location is back in Kilmore, Monaghan. Since you thought they would be in Northern Ireland this one perhaps seems more likely.

I can also find
Matilda Clarke 13 March 1864
Thomas Clarke 13 Oct 1865
Anne Clarke 26 April 1867
Samuel Brown Clarke born 24 Nov 1868
Mary Clarke born 1 Sept 1870
Margaret Clarke born 6 May 1872
Martha Clarke born 24 Jan 1875

These births are all in Kilmore, with the same parents although Brown is sometimes spelt with an e and sometimes Susan instead of Susanna.
There is also:
Martha Clarke born 20 March 1876 in Caddagh, Monaghan

shrugitoff · 02/11/2021 20:11

Sadly those children's names don't appear to be on my neighbour's family tree, Saker. Sad
She was quite definite.
I think it's the wrong Robert Clarke.
There is a Robert Clarke who married a Susanna Moore in Comber Co. Down
on the 25 th March 1853.
That may be the one.
Thank you for all your help, though.

Ok fair enough! Clarke and Brown are common names, although it is a bit of a coincidence for them to have the same Christian names and be married in the year she was expecting. If she was pretty sure about the year and likely birth dates going 10 years earlier seems to be pushing it. Anyway, good luck with it! Smile

Familysearch doesn't necessarily give more information on line, as NotDavidTennant says often you have to go to one of their centres to see their images of documents and I think they are still closed for the pandemic.

I'm about to go out but can have a look when I get home if no one else has, I'm also on Find My Past so can have a look there too.

shrugitoff · 03/11/2021 10:07

Thank you both.
It's annoying because she hasn't got a whole lot of information and obviously went down the wrong rabbit hole.
I think the tv programme Who Do You Think You Are whetted her appetite Smile

So from Family Search

Robert Clarke to Susanna Brown 12 May 1863 Leinster. No image available. ("Ireland Marriages, 1619-1898", database, FamilySearch (familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGNV-C5N : 6 February 2020), Robert Clarke, 1863.)

From Find My Past

Robert Clarke to Susanna Brown 12 May 1863, Ireland

Grooms Father John Clarke

Then there's a bit that says "previously married". (Intriguing!!! )

Bride Susanna Brown, Father John Brown

No image

Suggested birth of Robert was 1825, Balbriggan Dublin. Parents John and Margaret. Source = Irish RC baptisms

There are other records that say Robert Clarke married 1863 in Monaghan to one of the following - Susanna Brown, Isabella McBride or Margaret Anne Blackburn.

There is a Robert Clarke who married in Ballymoney Antrim in 1863 but not to a Susanna Brown

KingsleyShacklebolt · 04/11/2021 08:10

Family Search is not the site you need to be looking at.

The best site for Irish records in the 19th century is the Irish government site www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ Completely free, no need to register for an account and although you have to enter a name to see the records, you see the original image.

I found:

12 May 1863 - Robert CLARK and Susanna BROWN, married in the Presbyterian meeting house at Monaghan.

Irish Republic, but very close to the border with Northern Ireland - which of course did not exist at the time as all of Ireland was part of the UK.

shrugitoff · 04/11/2021 08:39

Thank you very much for that information starfishmummy and KingsleyShacklebolt
The marriage in the Presbyterian Meeting House in Monaghan looks like it may be the correct one as they were Presbyterians apparently.

OP posts:
shrugitoff · 04/11/2021 15:15

@KingsleyShacklebolt
I went on that site and entered Robert's name, the year and Monaghan but got nothing. Sad

OP posts:
KingsleyShacklebolt · 04/11/2021 17:31

It's definitely there!

You don't need to put in the registration district, just put in the name, check the box for marriage and date range 1863-1863.

Saker · 04/11/2021 18:21

@shrugitoff make sure you have civil records selected at the top not parish records. That's great, I've never done any Irish geneaology before but you can actually see the scanned record.

Saker · 04/11/2021 18:27

I have looked at the children's records that I found before on Ancestry and they do definitely look like the children of that marriage.

KingsleyShacklebolt · 04/11/2021 21:01

Yes it's brilliant to see the original image and you can also see info on witnesses which is usually not recorded on Ancestry or Family search.
