Help please, trying to find out if Great Aunt had children

Hi, I’ve recently started researching my family history and found that my Great Aunt (my maternal grandmother’s twin) did not “die young” as my mother and her siblings were told, but in fact lived to the age of 81 about 15 miles from the rest of the family. I also discovered that she married another of their sisters widower. A cousin has found some old family tree research which suggests they had 2 children but has no information about them. I’ve found no trace on Scotland’s people or Ancestry. They married in 1933 in Aberdeenshire. Can anyone suggest where I may be able to find out it they did indeed have any children? Sadly all my relatives who may have had any information have now passed away. Thanks very much in advance.

You could check on freebmd, there is a scottish version as well, sctbdm.
Also the site familysearch might give you some info. Good luck in your search

Thanks very much for your suggestions, sadly the sctbdm is not working currently but I’ll try again later.

I imagine the service offered may be restricted just now, but could you try this? (If your Great Aunt remained in Aberdeenshire). If you could find her death certificate, it is usually a son or daughter who registers it, it would say the relationship.

You may be able to find your great aunt on here. The 1939 register will show where she lived and with who. And more specifically any children living with her at that time.

You could request their marriage cert on Scotland's People. Then search for any children with that surname born in that registration district over the subsequent years - obviously works better with an unusual surname. Look for traditional naming patterns as clues - mother's maiden name as a middle name, first born son named after the father's father and so on.

Thanks so much for your help. I found the marriage certificate and searched as you suggested. I found two births, one the year after they married using two of her sisters names which seems too coincidental. I’ve ordered the birth certificates so fingers crossed!

Well done! You definitely see names repeated through generations, it's a very common thing to do. Also worth looking at the parish registers on family search too.
