Birth certificate help

If I wanted to send off for a birth certificate of a grandparent I didn't know who was born in Ireland, would I still need to provide full details like mother's maiden name etc ? I know uk legislation states full details to protect against identity fraud but not sure how you're meant to research a family tree otherwise when you don't know hardly anything

Thanks

Are you talking about the Republic of Ireland (the south) or Northern Ireland?

If you are talking about the Republic of Ireland, and your granny was born before 1920, then you'll find her here :' www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ (free)

If it is after 1920 you will need to go here :
www.gov.ie/en/campaigns/af7893-general-register-office/ (pay for certificates).

They will do the search for you if she was born after 1920. But you will need to give them as much information as you can to help them narrow the search. If all you can tell them is that her name was Mary Doyle and she was born somewhere in Ireland between 1930 and 1950, you're not going to get very far.

If however you can tell them that her mother was Bridget but you don't know her maiden name, her father was James, and that she was born in either Co Dublin or Co Wicklow, then that helps them considerably.

Ultimately though you might have to take a punt and order up a few certificates to get the right one.

I am assuming you have searched on free sites such as Family Search? There are lots of us here with extensive family history experience so post your questions and you'll get lots of help.
