Fascinating website regarding names, surnames worldwide

By accident I found a super site that shows the world wide distribution of forenames/given names, surnames, including their origins and their meanings.

Another site that references it describes it as a black hole in that you can lose days on it.

I've an unusual name, the only British national with the name, the only resident of France. And one of only less than 400 worldwide.

Its www.forebears.io, and is completely free;

Have fun

That’s interesting. There are only 1100 of my current name but millions of my maiden name.

Forgot to say that on a pc on the world map you can drill down from country to region, it'a a bit US biased giving average income for people with the name and other demographc details.

Just hope it stays free.

I tried my granny's surname, and there are only 20 people worldwide Shock
When I first started doing family history, I was stuck on her, and emailed at random a company in the US with her name, and it turned out to be run by my (unknown to me) second cousin. I guess that explains how it happened!

I've just searched my GM's maiden name and there are 35 people in the entire world with it. Off to try variant spellings now.

MustardRose · 20/06/2021 11:26

Variants - there are about 50, all in the USA and Canada. All 35 in the UK will be related to me I think.

Got a couple more to try now.

I've just tried a family surname (relatively unusual) and the map shows 13 people in Nottinghamshire of that surname in 1881 but I have 15 relatives with that surname in Nottingham in the 1881 census (and I'd be surprised that there weren't other cousins I've not researched). I'm intrigued where they're getting the data from (I'd have assumed the census, given the 1881 is normally open access) but this suggests not, or that it's not very accurate. Unless my ancestors weren't properly transcribed (which is possible, I don't keep the transcripts).

Has anyone else found this? I was really excited to hear about the website, as there used to be a similar UK-only one, done by one of the London unis, but I no longer have the link and haven't found it by googling.

Interestingly, apparently I don't exist Grin

Or I do but live in cornwall.... Not been to Cornwall since my last holiday roughly 2004 Hmm

So for me, not remotely accurate.

I got a warning when I tried the link on my phone, so can't try it out.
