An interesting name: Keren-Happuch!

An ancestor of mine is shown on census information as 'Karranappuck'. I didn't think that sounded quite right and a spot of googling led me to the biblical name of Keren-Happuch - Job's daughter, apparently!

My ancestor appears on two censuses with the wrong spelling: the first when she was a toddler and then 10 years later. But then she drops off and I can't find her anywhere, including census, marriages and deaths.

So here's my question: does anyone know of likely nicknames for this biblical name? A google search came up with the nicknames 'Happy' and 'Cara' but they're both drawing a blank. My ancestor's middle name is her mother's maiden name and she's not using that.

Any ideas on where to go from here?? Thanks!

I love researching my own family tree. I could go down a rabbit hole so easily.

Anyway, there's a K-H WEST born 1857 who can be found 1881 in Donnington. Don't know if it's the same person, but maybe there's a marriage which changed her surname. Or even a couple of marriages.

Thank you! I've checked the reference you've given and it's one I've seen already but not 'mine'. But what a wonderful name ... Keren-Happuch Twelves! Excellent.

I found her father's name on a marriage cert and it's not the same as the one on my records.

Thank you for looking though!

I too have been down a few rabbitholes tonight. Am going to sleep on it Smile

@Scarby9

My SIL is Keren so I remember looking the name up when we first met her. From memory, Keren-Happuch means ' asmall pot of eye- makeup'.
My friend at school was a Keren. I'd love to know how she is. We lost touch when I moved house unexpectedly. I don't suppose she was born in 1972 was she?

There's a Towns tree on ancestry with a Kerenhappuch in, which gives a death date as 16 Apr 1874, although no source. The father has a tag that says Towns Family Bible. Maybe it's worth getting in touch with them, although it's a long shot? It might not be your family anyway.

@WinterIsGone - sorry, this thread had fallen off my 'watch' list and I missed your message.

That is indeed my family! I should get in touch with them, shouldn't I? My direct relative actually married in to the Towns family but they might know more about what happened to them. I'm still at a bit of a dead end!

@SallyOMalley

It does indeed!

Our mysterious Keren-Happuch had an aunt that died just before she was born. She was called Keziah, who was also a daughter of Job.

Her siblings were called names like Anne, Fanny and Elizabeth, so I think our K-H was named in memory of her Aunt.

I'm just getting a bit frustrated that I can't find her after the census when she was about three! 🤯

I've just started the family history for the partner of my youngest daughter.

As soon as I saw one of the names I thought of this thread. The person on the direct line is called Keziah and her sisters are Jemima and Kerenappuch. That was the spelling when she was registered, but was called Keren-happuch at her baptism. They were born in the 1840's and 1850's in the Shropshire/Wales area.

My Keren-happuch also seems to disappear from the records after her birth and baptism in 1858 and the 1871 census. It's not vital that I track her down, but I would be interested. I'll give it some more time later. I'm pretty good at finding obscure relatives. Eventually.
