How to find out if someone has died

A distant cousin with whom I had been sporadically in contact is who I'm trying to locate.
I had an address, and had sent cards every year, but haven't heard anything back for several years.
Freebmd won't let me search past 1993, and FamilySearch isn't helping.
I have her DOB and names before & after marriage - and an address which I was using.
(Incidentally no post has ever been returned).

Do you know any of her/his kids/partners/friends/neighbours names? They could be on Facebook?

You can search for UK death certificates from six months ago via the gov website www.gov.uk/research-family-history. We did it when we needed copies of a fairly recent death, maybe helpful?

Unfortunately not - 'met' her online about 15 years ago, and then met her in person a few years after that - we kept in touch but it seems to have petered out.

I'll see if anything comes up in the Death Certs - didn't think of that, @Latenightreader - thankyou.

You can also search for free on government website to see if there was a Will.

Or local paper might have had a notice some if these are available to read online if you google obituary.

Returned post relies on the new residents, who don’t always bother...

You can set up a free GRO account and then search death records here:

www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

Hopefully you can spot if anyone with her full name and DoB shows up, especially if the registration area looks right.

You might post a letter to the old address, marked "to the occupier" asking if they know, and with a stamped, self-addressed envelope inside.

Few British people put sender's address on the back of their mail. If you put "if undelivered please return to...." it gives you a better chance.

You might try sending a signed-for letter, so you can see who signed to receive it. Or, if she owned the house, you could search online to see when it was last sold.
