I’m looking at a census, I’m not sure if this is the right person anyway, but what does this say her profession is ? The one that is crossed through. I am baffled.

What does this say ? Can anyone work it out ?

Could he be a nephew, married sister's child? Perhaps his mother died and she took him in? That could be why he is referred to as a lodger, he's not a child of the family.
Maybe when he was little she wanted to hide that he wasn't her child, but as he grew up it didn't matter so much.
Sorry to ramble, all fascinating stuff!

Yes, maybe that is so. I’m keen to find out, as by astonishing coincidence , I now live in the village where it seems highly likely that he (great great Grandfather) was born, and I can’t find anyone else with his name in this village at the right time, other than this trio. Seems odd that he has a different surname. I suppose she could have given him his father’s name, but the other boy has hers. When I’m absolutely sure that this is His birthplace then I’ll ask the local historian. I’m pretty certain that what I’m assuming is my great Grandmother’s family on later censuses is the right one though. This family stayed in the same house for decades, they are there in 1901 and she married in 1902, so I’m hoping that her marriage certificate will have that address, then I will know for sure that this is Great Great Grandfather’s home village as his birthplace is on the census.
Where they are living in 1861 is a ten minute stroll from my house, so it would be amazing if that is really my family.

Gosh, how amazing! What do the parish records show? Have the local clergy let you have a look?

Parish records might have been gathered together at the County archive office of course!

I’m going to chat to the vicar once I’m certain that G.G. Grandfather was born here. I have a dna match with someone who has someone with my G Grandmother’s sister’s (less common) name in their tree, so that is making me even more convinced.
I didn’t grow up near this village and we moved here quite by chance, so it is rather amazing. I’ve found one of my other Great Great Grandfathers in the other village I mentioned upthread, so I’m going to have a mooch around the cemetery there. The same vicar serves both this village and the other one, so I think he will be helpful to talk to.

Is your county here?

No, sadly not. Thank you for linking though.
