Hi I'm newly pregnant Smile I'm wanting some advice about my partners mother.
She has not been in our lives for 2 years and has caused my partner great suffering through being a lying manipulative parent with a history of mental illness.
For example; she has falsely accused his father of assault, demanded money from us on a number of occasions, sent horrible messages with 'visions' where my partner is going to suffer and finally sending a letter with all his pictures in to say she no longer has a child.
I'm worried that if she finds out we're having a child she will try to get back into our lives as it is her 1st grandchild.
Obviously we are not prepared to let her anywhere near our baby but I'm concerned that she may drag it through the courts with grandparents rights.
Would she get anywhere given all the history? Or are we right to stop any contact she may ask for?
Thanks x

No definitely not, grandparents rights are for existing children they have built a relationship with already.

No rights. Unless possibly strong ongoing relationship with the children.

Zero rights unless they have built up family life under article 8 of ECHR.

Grandparents don't have automatic rights, she would have to go to court & normally show that she has maintained a regular relationship with the grandchild, so it's normally when there is a break in contact with GP that there may be an argument for continued contact.
Although I think with that sort of history - keep any evidence etc, you never know you might need it, but I doubt she would be stable enough to take you to court! If she does try to re enter your lives be really firm, don't let her or she may have an argument for continued contact. You could Consider letting her send Christmas & birthday cards but vet them first, to make sure there's nothing inappropriate in them, but you are the best judge of that.

Grandparents have no automatic rights, if she had a pre-existing relationship with the child then she could argue it was in their best interest to continue contact but only if it benefits the child not for her own interests.
