I am new to tracing and although the 'findmypast' type websites appear to search for divorce records, do these exist on a register?

Divorce was very hard to obtain before the 1960's reforms which were pushed through by Coventry MP ( & solicitor) Bill Wilson

What sort of date were you looking for a divorce? There are ways of searching but not online

vjg13 · 30/03/2017 23:47

I don't know the exact years, it is 3 divorces involving the same person, the first approx 1978.

www.gov.uk/copy-decree-absolute-final-order

The central family court records can be searched for a decree absolute, this will not be case files - on a tiny percentage of case files survive after the 1930s for divorce.

What ivy said. Decree absolutes are a matter of public record, so anyone can ask for them. However, they will only search 5 years either side of the date you provide and it's £65 per search.

Thank you both so much, how much information is included on a decree absolute? I am trying to find out as much information about my father before I try to contact him, he is likely to be no longer living in the UK so it may not be possible anyway.

If you google decree absolute and click on images, you can see lots on there and decide if it's worth getting them.

vjg13 · 01/04/2017 08:57

I just did that! It would seem very little, apart from the names and actual date granted. I may just apply for the one I am most interested in.

Sound s like a good plan Smile

A decree absolute is just names and dates, it's very uninteresting.

If your looking for someone check probate and sills for any wills of people that are likely to have left your father money etc. Wills are far more interesting
