I'm looking for bright ideas

My grandmother (youngest in a big family) remembers two of her brothers coming home after the second world war. She remembers them wearing uniform and being glad to get it off once they reached home. Grandmother thinks they were stretcher bearers, but they refused to ever speak of what they had done or seen.

I've looked in the military records available online and can't find them anywhere. Could they have been working for some other organisation that had a uniform? They were not doctors or trained in medicine in any way, they were farmers. Where else should I look?

Hello there! Have you looked into RAF, Marines, Merchant Navy? The British Library have a section where you can look up registration cards (pay-per-view) online.

Hi, I've done searches of the general military databases (usually when access is free) and found great grandad (navy) and great grandad (army) so fairly sure I was doing it right. Maybe I will have better luck with The British Library - is it easy to find the right section?
Thanks for your help
