Please could I beg a bit of help?

I got a bit into doing my family tree last year after bubblerock gave me some amazing help to get started.

It's my grandmother's 95th birthday in April, and I am going to do her tree and a sort of folder with info on her family for her birthday, as she knows nothing at all about her family history, and I think she'd really enjoy it.

I was hoping that some very, very kind person might be able to help me follow up a few of the dead ends in her tree? I am not in the UK, but all her family are English.

The tree's on Ancestry.com at the moment - are there other sites that are worth me joining for a couple of months to try to get more info?

Try genesreunited.com

Thanks for the genesreunited tip Smile.

I've been playing around with it, but am finding it really user unfriendly .

Do you really have to contact every individual tree-owner before you can see any of their information, or am I doing something stupid?

Yes but the est thing about it is that it enables you to look at the census records (you have to pay a fee). You have to start by creating your tree and once you get to people born before 1911 (which is the earliest date we the UK census information is available) you will see on a drop down menue for each person whether they might be on the census or not. Click on the census you want to look at and see whether it is the right person (this where you have to pay).

A separate task (not related to gemesreunites) - If you haven't even got as far as finding out about your ancesters born in 1911, just find the 1911 census through gogle and when you get there enter as many details you know of the person eg name, approximate birth date, where born, and it will give you a load of names that might be the one you're looking for - then you have to pay to see the census details

Sorry I can't explain it any better; you just have to fiddle around with it

Genes trees are hidden. You simply subscribe an send a message to the tree owner. You can work out how you are related and then open your trees to each other. Most people share their info freely. In the past I have shared trees then swapped addresses and been sent photos, paper family trees and newspaper clippings. The contacts you make are invaluable. Also the community section is great. Membebmrs help with look ups and offer advice.

Ah - Thanks very much for the clarification.

I reckon I'll work on the tree as far as I can on Ancestry and then try to move it over to genesreunited and fill in gaps.

I'll happily look into it a bit if you provide me with details of what you are stuck on. It's a lovely idea for a giftSmile
