PHP Memory Limits

Just a quick poll type thread...

If you have a website, or a number of websites, what is the PHP memory limit allowe3d by your host?

For a starter, my host is 34sp, their standard limit is 32M.

128M - UK2

Some hosts allow increasing this yourself or will do so on request.

32M should be enough for most scripts though - what is causing the problem?

Wordpress 3.0 is a little memory hungry!

Currently I'm at 29MB out of 32MB! It isn't the plugins as they only account for 4-5MB of this. Need to switch themes and see how that impacts.

The official WP recommendation is for 256MB!

Generally its only updating where I get failures due to memory allocation failure, and my host will temporarily list limits for this but after the update I was hitting the problem where I couldn't load the admin pages due to being over limit.

I just checked three hosting accounts and all of them show 32M. However, all of them are using WHM / cPanel so it might just be the 'expected' case for 32M to work well enough for 99% of customers, and therefore the recomended setting for hosting services using WHM.

If you want more, perhaps a VPS would serve you better, as you could set up everthing with your own chosen figures.

34sp seem to set themselves out as WP specialists - see here so I would press them to increase the limit.

Personally I wouldn't recommend a VPS to replace a shared hosting account unless you know what you are doing with MySql configuration, and definately not if you are going to run any mail services (inbound or outbound) on it.

At the time of writing, I had not seen the other posts, so didn't know just what the OP had in mind when I mentioned VPS.

I've had no problems with mail service on VPS, but I won't bore anyone with why I have used VPS for e-mail as well as hosting.

I'm only running a fairly basic blog for friends and family on the exploits of DS - so I don't think I need VPS hosting just yet

To be fair to 34sp, they have altered my set-up so plugin's can "burst above" the 32MB limit (not quiet sure what exactly that is). So it is running nicely now.
