"Unidentified Network" on my netbook = can't connect to internet

In very, very simple language does anyone know what's going on?

Have an HP netbook running Windows 7 starter thing. Could use internet earlier today. Now it's showing access to my own wireless network but there also appears to be an "unidentified network" preventing connection.

Any clues as to what's up? Have searched online but most forum answers seem unfathomable to me.

Thanks

Might help if you identify what Netbook you are using in case someone has same model...

I assume you have encryption (WEP or WPA or WPA2) enabled on your wireless network...

When you say that this "unidentified network" is preventing connection, how do you know it is 'preventing' the connection ?

Is there a chance the signal is on the same channel - if so does anything change if you take your netbook within a couple of feet of the wireless router ?

Sorry, don't know what is going on - but am guessing a neighbour may have got their own router and it might be clashing with yours - usually I would expect your signal to be strong enough to overcome any neighbour's network signals, but never know...

What exactly happens and exactly what error message pops up?

Thanks for replies.

Right, have just turned it on and it's working!

It's an HP Mini 210-1001sa.

After doing a bit of digging on internet last night, I did wonder if it was someone else's interfering with mine. So, if it's working now that might make sense if they only use theirs in the evening?

Yes to WEP encryption

When I clicked on the icon at the bottom showing connection had a yellow triangle. If I clicked on it to open Network centre it showed that it was connected to our router. But that there was an Unidentified Network in the wasy. There actually a visual of My netbook -> Unidentified Network -x-> Internet.

So, will see what happens this pm?

Sometimes you can set a list of networks to join and give them an 'order of preference' so if you spot that, you could set your own as highest priority.

It is already set as first. And was showing as that last night. So, all a bit of a mystery at the moment. Thanks anyway.

I don't think that this is anything to do with the neighbour....

Have you installed iTunes or Quicktime on the machine? There does seem to be an issue with Windows 7 and the Bonjour service that Apple create.

There's a page here that shows how to disable and then enable the network connection which can be a temporary fix and another video showing how to stop Bonjour from running which can fix it if that's the cause.
