Can anyone recommend a website hosting service?

I want to create a website for advertising and professional purposes but I've no idea which hosts are best and which ones might end up being a rip off. I don't want a super-snazzy site, just something simple really. Def no Flash or audio or anything like that.

Is anyone very pleased with their website host? Or very pissed off? Any recommendations welcome.

You could use www.GBBO.co.uk (Get British Business Online) which is a free service from BT and Google Sites.

If you don't want mention of GBBO (they put their logo on the bottom - see my friend's site www.chesterwalks.co.uk as an example) then one of the first things you need to decide is how much you want to spend.

Hosting firms can charge what they like. Also, depending on what you plan to do, there is often a choice of Windows or Linux hosting.

Some domain registration firms offer hosting too, from a couple of pounds a month up, quite often. You can spend much, much, more, and you need to decide fairly early what you want from the site?

Do you plan to have a Blog, or sell products, or just have various information about the products/ services you offer. (If the last one, it is worth updating your site - eg moving the items around - every few weeks so that the search engines note there has been a change, rather than the site appearing completely static.)

You might get some 'specific' recommendations if you start a thread on geeky_stuff when you have considered what you are likely to have on your website - not meaning to dismiss your query but there are really a lot of possibilities and would not want to put you on a track which doesn't meet your needs (I develop sites but use fairly low cost hosting for several dozen lightly used web sites, which suits my needs and those of my clients, but might get howls of laughter from someone spending 200+ a year to host one web site).

Thanks, NetworkGuy! I will probably have a blog (or a link to my pre-existing blog) plus a page listing and describing products as well as a pages for things like reviews, recommendations etc. It's likely to need updating at least monthly due to the nature of the business. I will have a few pretty pictures but it will mainly be text.

I don't make a fortune from this business so I don't want to spend loads.

Well, having an existing blog is a start. Using the free GBBO-provided Google Sites will cost you nothing (not even domain registration cost - though keep an eye on BT domain pricing as they would be the ones charging for renewal in 2 years time).

Google Sites interface might be a bit clunky, but if you use that to start with and see whether you can include your photos (and move text/photos around easily) then it would perhaps be OK. If not, then you could register another domain (eg the .com version) and put introductory text on the GBBO site with a link to the .com which can then be modified as much as you like.
